This week’s Pakele Live! with Tony Solis showcases three very talented female singers: Sabrina, Erika Elona and Shar Carillo.
Sabrina is a 2011 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-nominated singer/songwriter. After releasing her debut EP, The Anomaly, in 2009, the Portland-based musician recruited producer John Askew (The Dodos, Richmond Fontaine) to assist in the making of her full-length album, The Hawk & The Hunter, released in 2010. Coming from an unconventional childhood, her father, a mariachi singer and her mother a hula dancer, she stamps her personal experiences and musical innovations into her songs. The result is a singular, intimate sound that continues to attract audiences and listeners across the country. Her single “Over-Rated Town” is part of ʻAumakua Records’ recently-released “Alternative HI” album, available through Mountain Apple.
Erika first taught herself how to play America’s “I Need You” at age 10 from a book of chords belonging to her dad. Since then she has drawn inspiration from artists such as Joni Mitchell, Patty Griffin, and Gavin DeGraw. Erika began playing gigs in coffee shops and dive bars around Oʻahu when she was still in high school, and with her hard work through the years (and a bit of serendipity), found herself invited to contribute a track to the “Alternative HI” album. She describes her voice as “Jewel, Neko Case, and Feist thrown into a blender,” and her songs range from quiet acoustic love songs to soulful, piano-driven ballads. She is now also performing with a band, has released a single, and will begin work on a full-length album.
Born and raised on Kauai, Shar is the daughter of two talented musicians: Loke Sasil (a solo artist as well as one half of the duo Leahi), and Sean Carillo, who played alongside John Cruz for many years. Shar is also the great granddaughter of the late George Kaleiohi Sr. who composed the beautiful, traditional Hawaiian song, "Waiulu." A graduate of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Shar now resides on Oʻahu and is pursuing a career in music. She performed the duet “You Are My Song” with Waipunaʻs Matt Sproat on their album “E Hoʻi Mai” (currently nominated for 9 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards), and she is recording her soon-to-be-released debut solo album.
