Aloha e San Diego area ukulele players. There are some special ukulele
events this week for us to show our support.

NAMM is celebrating Music Monday on May 7th and you're invited to make some music! Music Monday is the kickoff to NAMM's National Wanna Play Music Week and the association is planning to kickstart the activities right outside the NAMM offices and invites you to take a little time away from your desk to join in on a drum and ukulele circle to celebrate!
Music Monday is a collaboration with Canada 's Coalition for Music education and each year nearly 600,000 students and individuals across the United States and Canada join together in song and music making at the same time in a collaborative show of support for music education and the fun and benefits of playing music. This year, the mayors from San Diego and Carlsbad , Calif. will join NAMM staff and special guests in front of NAMM’s offices to proclaim May 7, 2012 as Music Monday and to celebrate music making. San Diego media are also being encouraged to cover the event to spread the word about the fun and benefits of playing music.
Facilitated by Christine Stevens of San Diego-based Upbeat Drum Circles and staff members from San Diego music product retail store Bertrands Music, the drum and ukulele circle will be a celebration of impromptu community music making. All participants will be guided on what to play at the drum and uke circle.
Event details:
Location: Right in front of the NAMM Building (Inside if it rains)
Time: 9:45 to 10:30 (drum circle starts at exactly 10 a.m.)
No instruments required. They will be provided.
RSVP is required. Please send your confirmation to kymberlyd @ namm.org.

Herb Ohta, Jr.

Herb’s interest in music was very evident at an early age. Herb’s grandmother taught him his
first song on the ‘ukulele at the age of three. The song was “Happy Birthday.” His father, Ohta-San
started his early instruction on the ‘ukulele and Herb continued to study music playing the viola in high school. Herb was also a member of The Honolulu Boys Choir, The Honolulu Children’s Opera
Chorus, and The University High School Select Choir.

As a teacher, composer, recording artist, entertainer, and producer, Herb Ohta, Jr. solidly establishes himself in the company of musicians who promote our Hawaiian instrument in the music landscape today. It is Herb’s goal to share the beauty of Hawai’i’s music, its culture, and the ‘ukulele to people all over the world. Herb has performed throughout the state of Hawai‘i and has traveled overseas to Japan and the mainland USA. Herb Ohta, Jr.
is certainly a vanguard in this new generation of ‘ukulele players.

Wayne Papac
Local Artist

San Diego artist ~
Wayne
Papac
Began playing guitar with his uncle at age 9, and has enjoyed many years of playing guitar and singing. He had a love and interest in Hawaiian music since he was first
introduced to it in 1974. Wayne
joined the Hui O Hawai’i San Diego in 1999 and became active in their ukulele
classes and music groups. He credits Auntie Maelani Wilcox for teaching him proper pronunciation and phrasing of the traditional Hawaiian songs.
Wayne has played all over southern California for many years. His love for the Hawaiian culture and music is very close to his heart.

It's easier to ask for forgiveness, than permission!
