This week on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis we have multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano and Hawai’i Music Award winner Ku’uipo Kumukahi, and special guests Kahula O Hawaiʻi – a hula hālau visiting from Japan
A self-taught musician influenced by family songs, Hawaiian singers and her parents, Ku’uipo learned to play the ‘ukulele at a young age. She was encouraged to add guitar and bass to her repertoire, but formal music training didn’t begin until later, when she began to take private voice lessons and enrolled in music classes in college. She is a true artist of Hawaiian music. From her family come deeply rooted traditions, knowledge and values which she presents with the voice that has made her known throughout the State of Hawai‘i, the continental United States and abroad.
Known as the “Sweetheart of Hawaiian Music,” she’s won Female Vocalist of the Year honors several times (in addition to her many other Nā Hōkū Hanohano awards). One of her albums received an unprecedented 9 Nā Hōkū nominations in 1994, and garnered 5 awards.
Ku’uipo has performed throughout Hawai’i, as well as on the mainland and abroad. Her mission is to produce, preserve, perpetuate and promote quality in Hawaiian music as well as the music of Hawai’i and its performance, which includes the use of Hawaiian language, and the use of artistry, mannerism and values that are unique to Hawaiian music and hula. She is the current President of the Hawai’i Academy of Recording Arts. Her favorite ‘olelo no’eau (proverb or saying) is something her father used to tell her: “le’ale’a kalaikalai manumanu i ka loa’a” (essentially, “Have fun, and do it right the first time.”)
