This week on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis we welcome 2010ʻs Nā Hōkū Hanohano Female Vocalist of the Year (and 2012ʻs nominee in that same category) Mailani!
Known for her collaborative efforts as a member of the hugely popular, Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-winning duo Keahiwai (who released five albums) and the rocking trio, MighTy J, Mailani’s self-titled debut solo album earned her Female Vocalist of the Year honors at the 2010 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards. The album featured innovative yet respectful interpretations of Hawaiian standards, as well as several original compositions in both Hawaiian and English. Her blend of the contemporary and the traditional delighted aficionados of both genres.
Mailani continues to challenge herself musically. Her second solo album, ʻAina again includes a mix of contemporary songs and traditional Hawaiian pieces (including an original song co-written with Keola Donaghy). Those who love Hawaiian music are impressed with the way her obvious love of her homeland and respect for the generations that came before shine through brightly. ʻAina is nominated for five Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards in 2012 – the results will be announced Sunday!
