so Jake Shimabukuro has something new, or at least new to me...
"Peace, Love, Ukulele" , there's a cd, but ALSO A BOOK OF TRANSCRIPTIONS.

When I couldn't get into his sold out appearance in Denver last Friday, I decided to go for a consolation gift--to myself.

Found it, on his website, and then also at Amazon...
It's a songbook, with "note-for-note" transcriptions w tab...

you'll need to switch uke to high G, as I did for his "Play Ukulele Loud" dvd.

BUT here beggineth the review:
This is after a short time to look over and make first assesments.

NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART! And not a walk in the park!
Most of us have probably watched his performance in Central Park of "While my Guitar... and this transcription of "WMGGW" is NOT from that performance.

Understandably, his virtuosity means his versions vary--QUITE A BIT, probably EVERY TIME.
He's masterful at concocting little 'impromptu improvisations, cadenzas and extra passages!

These transcriptions are, I assume from the CD versions of the same name, so that's probably on my next list--judging by the detail, I expect them to reflect accurately what's done on cd, it won't make them easy!

I'm finding that making a first stab at some of his work probably is best done by watching and listening to a video or you-tube version, and working sections.
Possibly some prayer and practice helps.

I do still favor the Central Park version, (probably just my familiarity and conditioning) but only checked a few of the many Jake you-tubes.

There may also be some other folks doing teaching for these versions of you-tube selections like WMGGW and other Jake selections, and SOME of those you-tube teaching videos can be quite good (while others are lame!).

The visuals combined with the audio are an easier way to decipher and make a stab at a song's version.

I say make your best guesses of accurate voicing/position, from copying what you can see and hear there.

FOR MOST, this probably makes more sense than working from intricate and sometimes befuddling notation/tab!

Transcriptions have ALOT of stuff that is not "linear"--just not a straight shot from page into the eyes and fingers (for most of us).
Having the same version on a cd should be helpful...but not expecting miracles.

But otherwise, the transcribing of music and tab appears well-done, and accurate, pending my comparing written stuff to the cd.
Here endeth the review. (language courtesy of Protestant upbringing)!

Howzit Kapila Kane, if you get frustrated with learning Jake's version of WMGGW, you can try the easier guitar version that this middle-aged dude plays: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnJfo74Y4rQ .

I don't think there are any tabs, so you'll have to figure it out from the YouTube video in just 3 easy steps: (1) Watch, (2) Listen, (3) Learn. If that's too difficult, you can try Led's one-step method: (1) Jus press. Oh, and when you figure it out, come teach me (either the uke version or the guitar one--I'm not picky) next time you're in town. Have fun!

Aloha,
Doug
