Howzit Bay Area Taropatchers, I’m helping to spread the word on the very special “Legends of Waikiki Tour,” featuring Marlene Sai, Nina Kealiiwahamana, and Gary Aiko, with special guests Kenneth Makuakane and Jeff Au Hoy on Hawaiian steel guitar. A big mahalo to Patrick Landeza and Dr. Pamela Lindell of Ho’olupa Hawaiian Culture Foundation for bringing this unprecedented tour to the Bay Area. It doesn’t get much better than this!

Nostalgic nights under the banyan tree return with “The Legends of Waikiki” in the Bay Area! Revisit exotic evenings at Duke Kahanamoku’s Supper Club with the classic voice of Marlene Sai, the sounds of the hit radio program “Hawaii Calls” with Nina Keali`iwahamana, and swoon with the romantic voice of crooner Gary Aiko. Joining us for this revisit to Hawai`i’s golden era are special guests Kenneth Makuakane, and Jeff Au Hoy on Hawaiian steel guitar. Your host Patrick Landeza will make sure that your evening conjures the rhythmic sound of the surf and the charms of tropical yesteryears.
Marlene Sai: A member of the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame and recipient of the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts Na Hoku Hanohano Lifetime Achievement Award, Marlene has been a central figure in the Hawaiian entertainment industry for over five decades. Since she first appeared singing with Don Ho at Honey’s in Kaneohe, Oahu in 1960, Marlene has built a solid career as an internationally touring singer with over 20 albums to her name, and an accomplished actress on stage and television. Fans of Webley Edwards' long-running Hawaii Calls radio show will recall Marlene as a regularly featured guest. A true Renaissance woman, Marlene also served as President of Hawaii Academy Recording Arts, as commissioner of the Mayor’s Commission on Culture & the Arts, and as Chair of the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards.
Gary Aiko: The first male vocalist to ever win a Na Hoku Hanohano Award (Hawaiian Grammy), back in the days when they were called the Nani Awards, Gary melts emotions with his deep, silky baritone singing. Gary began his professional career in 1957 as a singer performing four shows a night at the Waikiki Sands Restaurant. He soon joined the band at Honey's, playing upright bass behind Don Ho, Sonny Chillingworth, and an occasional Gabby Pahinui. He went on to become an internationally touring singer, with engagements from Brazil to Hong Kong and New York's Carnegie Hall. Currently a solo singer with the Honolulu City and County Royal Hawaiian Band since 2004, Gary also performs weekly at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort.
Nina Kealiiwahamana: Katherine "Nina" Kealiiwahamana Rodrigues Rapozo began singing as a child with her famous mother, Victoria Ii Rodrigues ("Auntie Vickie"). In 1957 she joined the cast of Hawaii Calls as a member of The Waikiki Girls trio, and she remained with the radio show through its last broadcast in 1974. Nina’s nightclub appearances began in 1957 at the Waikiki Biltmore’s Top of the Isle showroom. She sang for Queen Elizabeth II and Emperor Hirohito on their visits to Hawaii. The recipient of three Nani Awards and a Na Hoku Hanohano Award for Lifetime Achievement, Nina was honored by the City & County of Honolulu in 2005 as one of 100 influential citizens who have made enduring contributions to Honolulu’s history and culture over the past 100 years.
Kenneth Makuakane is the recipient of no fewer than twelve Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, and he performs regularly with the multi-award winning group, The Pandanus Club. Jeff Au Hoy is a master of the classic Hawaiian steel guitar master. Berkeley-based Hawaiian music impresario Patrick Landeza is a top slack key guitarist, the student of slack key masters like the late Ray Kane and Sonny Chillingworth.

Yeah, too bad they're not touring up to the Pac NW, or even Southern Cal. Maybe in the future, if schedules allow. I'm hoping we get good turnouts for these Northern Cal concerts, because it takes considerable planning, logistics, and kala to bring these musicians from Hawaii to the mainland. Mahalo to Patrick Landeza and Dr. Pam Lindell of Ho'olupa Hawaiian Culture Foundation for their vision and hard work.
I don't take any of this for granted and am grateful to be able to meet and see these wonderful musicians here on the mainland. The least we can do is help spread the word and support Hawaiian music. As Carole Davis at The Cue in Concord reminded me last year when they started bringing in Hawaiian shows there, "It takes a community to make it happen."

Just a quick reminder that the "Legends of Waikiki Tour" is this Fri., Sat., and Sun. (June 29, 30, and July 1). Enjoy live Hawaiian music from yesteryear here in the Bay Area!
