I’m excited to spread the word that multiple Hoku award winner Mark Yamanaka is touring Northern California for the first time this week. Mark was a big winner at the 2011 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards (the “Hawaiian Grammys”), when he won Album of the Year (for “Lei Pua Kenikeni”), Male Vocalist of the Year, Most Promising Artist, as well as Song of the Year for his composition, “Kaleoonalani.” Mark is from Hilo and here’s an excerpt from his bio:

“Like a blossoming flower, Mark’s undeniable talent has been nurtured from a young age by renowned musician, composer and kumu hula, Johnny Lum Ho, whose traditions produced some of Hawaii’s most cherished Hawaiian falsetto singers like Darren Benitez and Nā Palapalai’s Kuana Torres Kahele. Like these contemporaries, Mark’s soaring voice is also perfectly suited for the specialized art of falsetto. He takes the teachings of Uncle Johnny and adds his own flair with enviable ease, then spices things up by effortlessly gliding into a rich and soulful baritone vocal.”

Here is one of my favorites that Mark sings with his beautiful falsetto, “Lei Pua Kenikeni,” written by John Almeida: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kfjX8hgP3c .

Anybody that is near any of these venues should really try to see Mark Yamanaka. Some video of his fantastic performance last night at Don Quixote's in Felton, California. Along with Bert Naihe and Eddie Atkins, Mark was simply one of the best I have seen in a long, long time.

Mahalo for posting the videos from last night. I would have plugged the Felton show too if I posted a day or too earlier . Incidentally, I met a KAPU colleague of yours and her husband waiting in line at the "Legends of Waikiki Concert" at Freight & Salvage. I can't recall her name offhand, but she's the one who has the autographed uke. I could relate, because I had my autographed bag!

Hope our paths will cross some day. If you're ever in the San Francisco area, stop by at one of our kanikapilas. I always enjoy meeting fellow Taropatchers.

Aloha,
Doug
