I just advised Myrna Kamae about this flagrant violation of their copyright.

Expect to see that the youtube folks will soon remove the Kamae films.

The videos are no longer up.

I wondered about this when I saw the postings by BODA. I am sure the motivation was good, but misguided or misinformed. I am glad to see that the intellectual property rights of the Kamae `ohana are protected.

I think that most 'patchers will be happy to respectfully pay for the opportunity to enjoy these copyrighted works, with all aloha due to the filmmakers we admire.

I can tell you one kanaka who's not sad - you're lucky Uncle Eddie's lawyers aren't knocking on your door. I'd bet a fair amount that any other kanaka who earns their living creating intellectual property is equally not sad.

Nice quote...
However, a cool quotation--as irrelevant as it is-- will not right this for you and I hope you realize that this is about copywrite infringment.
What ever your intentions were, I suggest giving up this rediculous effort to be right, and admit your error allready!
An appology to Eddie Kamae and group could be in order as well.

Bob

A quick reminder about the Taropatch.net policy on copyrighted materials.
quote:
Taropatch.net does not allow its members to broadcast offers or requests for illegally copied materials to its community. Although this site supports the perpetuation of slack key guitar and `ukulele traditions in many ways, Taropatch.net must protect itself from the potential legal problems associated with copyright infringement of published materials. We believe there is too much good here to risk losing over intellectual property issues. Moreover, it is important to respect the works of artists and teachers so that they may come and share in the aloha and information exchange here too.

Original works by Taropatch.net members, works in public domain, and/or those used with the necessary written permissions of the original artist/publishers may be posted. All others may not be posted. Thank you for complying with this policy and making this website a friendly, informative and interesting resource.
Mahalo to the community for supporting those who make the videos and music.

Andy

IP issues aside, it is too bad that things like this are not more widely accessible as a learning resource.

Re: accessibility.

When I started researching Hawaiian music, Eddie's films were not easy to view. But now that they are on DVD at pretty reasonable prices ($20 each) and can be bought on line via Eddie's website (also via Amazon, though direct purchase supports the foundation better), there's little excuse to look to illicit YouTube rips or grainy VHS dupes. And if money is a problem, I suspect that many libraries have copies for loan or viewing. That's pretty accessible, particularly for work that is not funded and distributed by Big Media or even a university. And given that situation, discouraging copying and distribution outside of channels that support the source of the films is more than just a matter of commercial ethics.

I understand what you are saying, and I am not speaking specifically about Eddie Kamae's admirable body of work, but you could also argue that libraries and DVDs are relatively less accessible than the internet and streaming videos.

Again, commercial ethics aside, I just think would be nice if media such as this were available for more people to watch. More people with a better knowledge and a better understanding of our culture is a good thing.
