Aloha All,

New to the forum, been playing Kihoalu for a while. I live in Mililani and play in a blues band called Burnin blue. Slack key got me started on guitar about 15 years ago. I play guitar, harp, uke, and key boards. Jack of all master of none.

Howzit Brian & welcome to the 'Patch. I'm a long time ki ho'alu player living on Oahu too. We definitely need to get together to share some ki ho'alu. I teach slack key but more importantly I have a few friends who also play slack. Friends & I also organize 2 monthly kanikapilas. One at Waimea Valley on the 3rd Sundays of the month & another on the last Sunday at the Bishop Museum. Both run from 1pm to 4pm but we're there from 11am. We always have 3 or 4 slackers in attendance & sometimes as many as 8 or so. Come check it out. Look in the "Kanikapila" section of Taropatch for details.

Howzit Brian

Lots of times musicians at our kanikapila don't have pick ups in their guitars or ukuleles so we use one of our 6 or so mics to amplify the instrument. We'll use the extra mic when it's you're turn to lead a song. No need bring mic, we should be able to accommodate you. Come early if you can so we can get you squared away during soundcheck which is 12 noon. We'll be there from around 1030am. We always get good jam sessions during soundcheck too so it's a bonus to come early. Good talk story too & most importantly.....plenty good people.

The kanikapila is fantastic! I cannot believe the dedication of the hosts who bring and setup all the gear at Waimea Valley. Duke, do you folks have the same set up at Bishop Museum?

Great to see you guys connect. Welcome to the 'patch, Brian!

@ Andy- The Abrigos actually purchased a brand new $5000 sound system that is far better than the one we were using when you visited last year in April. The same system is used at the Bishop Museum Kanikapila too. Can't say enough about the Abrigo's dedication to both kanikapila. The new sound system is primarily used for the kanikapila. I don't think they've even used it at a personal gig yet. So it's $5000 for the system, their time spent hosting, setting up, breaking down & out of pocket expenses incurred traveling to & from the kanikapila. These people walk the talk when it comes to their efforts to perpetuate traditional Hawaiian music. That's why I'm so proud to be associated with them.
