I was wondering today what was the first Hawaiian album released in CD format.

As a little background, I found the following on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compact_Disc

The first test CD was pressed in Langenhagen near Hannover, Germany, by the Polydor Pressing Operations plant. The disc contained a recording of Richard Strauss's Eine Alpensinfonie (in English, An Alpine Symphony), played by the Berlin Philharmonic and conducted by Herbert von Karajan.[13] The first public demonstration was on the BBC television program Tomorrow's World when The Bee Gees' album Living Eyes (1981) was played.[14] In August 1982 the real pressing was ready to begin in the new factory, not far from the place where Emile Berliner had produced his first gramophone record 93 years earlier. By now, Deutsche Grammophon, Berliner's company and the publisher of the Strauss recording, had become a part of PolyGram. The first CD to be manufactured at the new factory was The Visitors (1981) by ABBA.[15] The first album to be released on CD was Billy Joel's 52nd Street, that reached the market alongside Sony's CD player CDP-101 on October 1, 1982 in Japan.[16]

On March 2, 1983 CD players and discs (16 titles from CBS Records) were released in the United States and other markets. This event is often seen as the "Big Bang" of the digital audio revolution. The new audio disc was enthusiastically received, especially in the early-adopting classical music and audiophile communities, and its handling quality received particular praise. As the price of players gradually came down, the CD began to gain popularity in the larger popular and rock music markets. The first artist to sell a million copies on CD was Dire Straits, with its 1985 album Brothers in Arms.[17] The first major artist to have his entire catalogue converted to CD was David Bowie, whose 15 studio albums were made available by RCA Records in February 1985, along with four Greatest Hits albums.[18] In 1988, 400 million CDs were manufactured by 50 pressing plants around the world.[19]

Anybody have any ideas? Do any of you remember the first Hawaiian music CD that you bought?

Great post. Interesting.

I do not have a guess for first Hawaiian music compact disc. My first CD purchases were The Best of Keola & Kapono Beamer: Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar and John Keawe Ho'onanea. Not long after, I bought HAPA's debut album.

I'm guessing 1990-ish -- but have sent email to some industry folks here in the islands, hoping to perhaps be able to give more accurate information. Will post as soon as I get their replies!

One of the first Hawaiian CDs I bought was Pandanus Club's first release. Oddly enough it was misprinted and had classical music on the CD although it was labeled as Pandanus Club. I was about to dismiss Pandanus Club thinking that this is not Hawaiian music but good thing I took the CD back and got the real deal because they became one of my favorite groups. Too bad I didn't keep the mistaken CD, would have been a good conversation piece.

The first Hawaiian CD I bought was Best of the Brother Cazimero Vol. 1 in 1987.

Regarding this question, I am submitting this on behalf of Kenneth Makuakane as he requested.

I had also sent a message to Kenneth via facebook and he responded to me as follows, and asked that I post this here on Taropatch:

"Truthfully, if anyone would be the first to do it, it would be Mountain Apple. You should write to them and see. As a matter of fact, I will be seeing Leah Bernstein at a Grammy function next week in Honolulu. If I remember, I'll ask her mana'o. Great question.

I can't seem to post a message on Taropatch. Can you post this for me?

I was just writing to Norman that Pandanus Club was not the first ones, though it was one of the early offerings in 1987. I believe the Mountain Apple Company would have been at the cutting edge of offering the first CDs. I would imagine a release in 1986 would be about the first time a Hawaiian product would be on CD format.
When we released our first CD "E Hula Mai"" in 1987, our initial run of CDs was 7500 units and 2500 units of cassettes. They were gone in way under a month. I would therefore surmise that CDs were well distributed at least a year, because of the consumer consumption."

Norm and I have been chatting about this offline, and I wanted to clarify the question.

I believe we are trying to figure out the first Hawaiian music recording created exclusively for the CD format. "Best of Brothers Cazimero - Volume 1" and "The Best of Sunday Manoa - Volume 1" both came out in 1987, as did Keola and Kapono Beamer's "Honolulu City Lights." I told Norm that this pretty much comprises the first stack of CDs that I took home from Tower Records when I bought my first CD player. But these albums are all reissues of previously recorded material.

Looking through my collection (and by no means do I own them all), the earliest newly-recorded CD that I can find is "E Hula Mai." So Ken and company may hold the distinction. I cannot find a Mountain Apple CD release from that year that is not a reissue. In fact, I reject Ken's assertion that MAC was on the bleeding edge because they released not one, but two new Brothers Cazimero recordings a year earlier in 1986 and neither was available on CD - only LP and cassette. "The Sound of the Sea Surrounds Me" was released in early 1986 on LP and cassette and was not re-released on CD until 2002. (I have a bizarre Japan-only release from 1992 with some additional tracks recorded especially for the Japan audience.) And "In This Time Past" was released in late 1986 on LP and cassette and was never released on a CD but went straight to MP3s only recently.

Brothers Cazimero do hold the distinction of releasing the first Hawaiian music album recorded in an all-digital facility and, therefore, bearing the "DDD" symbol on the cover: "Hawaiian Paradise." I still have a piece of MAC promotional literature in which they tout that this is the "first all-digital Hawaiian music recording." Then again, this could purely be marketing hyperbole, but I couldn't find an earlier "DDD" recording from Hawai'i.

For what it's worth...

Bill, thanks for clarifying the issue on my behalf.

As Bill has correctly stated, I'm not interested in re releases on CD of Hawaiian albums that were previously released on either vinyl and or cassette. The question is about which NEW Hawaiian music album was first released as a CD.

So even though Kenneth doesn't want to claim the honor for The Pandanus Club's 1987 release of "E Hula Mai" until we have more evidence of an earlier CD release, that CD is in first place, so far.

Any more input and information would really be appreciated.

Checked with Jon DeMello of Mountain Apple. Their first CD-only release (not previously recorded on vinyl or cassette) was "Hawaiian Paradise" by the Brothers Cazimero in 1989.

Not sure if any other record label (such as Hula Records) had an earlier CD-only release...
