After listening to the Dave Gard "Gabby" interviews, talking to Peter Medeiros and Aunty Manu Lono (kumu hula in Seattle, of the Ho'opi'i ohana from Kaua'i) and Uncle Bernie Simeona (his Dad played accordion), I wonder if anyone else has anything to say about this sometimes maligned instrument for Hawaiian Music. BTW, the box has been berry berry good to me, ask Slipry1, but then Traditional Music ALWAYS has ono grinds (since when did an Aunty or a Tutu hang out at a "pop" music venue cooking tasty morsels?)

Ata Damasco uses accordion. Peter Medeiros used it on his "Ko`olau" CD (one of the all time BEST slack key recordings). As I cogitate a bit, I am sure I will come up with more.

Kani Nahaku played accordion on two glorious recordings by the Maui Hawaiians on Tradewinds Records in the 1960s. And could the guy ever play...

...as could Nelson Waikiki, the lead 'ukulele of the group.

Both of the albums Bill is referring to, are up for grabs on ebay right now. I don't think I paid quite this much for my copy of the first one.

Here is the second. Priced about right.

Ah, somewhere I have a photo of Auntie Nona Beamer with a little accordion on stage at Aloha Music Camp at Kalani Honua, I think around 2004 or 2005.
Will go look for that...

Also, "Radio Hula" on Dancing Cat's
Hawaiian SKG, masters collection vol. 2,
This session, from a Nashville recording with Led, is real close to the version in Mark Hanson's book transcription has ACCORDION, as well as acoustic rhythm guitar, upright bass and light percussion.
The Accordion adds gentle texture, provides a subtle background "wash", which adds smoothness and a little depth--yet is almost "invisible", unless you think about what else is in there.

Well, I remembered it as more significant in Radio Hula.
But in actuality, the accordion only appears at 3:05, on the last pass through the melody...and song is over at 3:22 plus the great tag Led plays.
So only 15 seconds of fame...not enough, Everyone deserves at least 15 minutes.
It was nice too, I had remembered the accordion flavors, and thought there was more.
I have a friend who came from North Dakota, where you get your accordion before your first bicycle...ended up backing up Luciano Pavorati at big concert in 90's. Those Italian/Hawaiian love songs need accordion! Amore Nui.

Joey Miskulin of Riders in the Sky did the accordion work on Led's album.

That vinyl by the Maui Hawaiians is downloadable from iTunes. I'm finding more and more old vinyls on iTunes this days...Leina`ala Haili and Cyrus Green showed up recently. Glad to see the vinyls being made available!

Michael Cord began making nearly his entire catalog - all of the previously unavailable Tradewinds titles, in particular - available through download both through iTunes and the Cord International website nearly three years. That being said, I find these to be a real "buyer beware" situation. I shelled out for a few titles, and they sound no better - and, in many cases, sound far worse - than my vinyl originals. I tend to believe that this is because no remastering when into these products.

It is only my personal opinion, but I believe if you are going to sell albums at full iTunes prices, some work should go into that. You just can't capitalize on your catalog. Why pay the same price for a low-quality MP3 made from a less-than-pristine vinyl pristine as we would for a brand new release done in a state-of-the-art studio? I just don't get it.

I am seeing this all the time with some purveyors of classic jazz from outside of the U.S. where copyright law does not apply to them. They are digitizing old vinyl LPs no longer available in any other format, and with no thought to noise reduction or click-and-pop removal, they are selling these to eager U.S. audiences who then complain that they received an inferior product. Well, duh! Any real label would both pay for the rights to the source material and painstakingly remaster these in a package that is acceptable for the price point. (Case in point: Check out any of the remasters done by Michael Cuscuna's team at Mosaic Records.)

At least Cord and Lehua own their masters. That's a start. It's only a start.

I have not heard any of the Lehua reissues yet. But I will check a few out this evening. I am going to lay odds that no remastering took place. Otherwise, the news of these reissues would have been trumpeted throughout the Hawaiian music industry (John Berger, etc.). A quick look at eMusic (my download site of preference - fully legal, yet less than half the price of iTunes) shows that nearly two dozen Lehua titles were reissued this year alone. Working at such a rate, I am certain that nobody located the master tapes, took them to a 24-bit remastering facility, and did what should rightfully be done to these precious recordings.
