Does anybody have experience with "Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Lessons - Keawe Style", John Keawe's second instructional DVD that came out in 2008? His first from 2005 is reviewed on Taro Patch and seems very well-received, but I can't find any mention of the latter. How do you think it compares with the erlier DVD?

Just as good in my opinion. Tunes are a little more advanced. |

Thanks. How advanced would you say each DVD is, on a scale of 1 to 5? Do they have tab? |

They don't have Tab. I didn't need it and I'm not sure it helps all of the time. It all depends on your skill level. John typically does soem of the tunes in tunings other than Taro Patch (Open D, D6, Bb, Dminor). The good news is that he usually does some fairly simple fingerings. That's where I think he shines; doing simple stuff that sounds interesting. The secret to his DVDs is just watch them a lot. Pause and start over, set up a loop, watch, watch, watch and learn. It helps a lot if you know the tuning, so that you'll understand why what he does works. |

John's songs are really easy to learn -- especially if you break them down into repeatble phrases with minor variations. Chunk and I used to play many of John's songs which we learned from him at Chunky's house or from the DVDs. We called John the "patron saint" of the SoCal Slack Key Society weekly Open Mike (which, due to rising fuel costs, has gone the way of the hula hoop). |
