Hawaiian Slack Key Vol 1 Waikiki # 319 Stereo (mfg. by Rada Records of Canada)
After much searching, I finally found a vinyl copy of this fine album. For some reason, as far as I know, it has never been made available in digital form.
It is a real classic, containing several performances by Gabby Pahinui which are rare and beautiful, especially “Pua Lilia”. Again, as far as I know, this is the only recording of this particular song by him. which is an amazing example of his falsetto singing. I used to go to Honey’s in Kaneohe back in the early 60’s, when Don Ho had both Gabby and Sonny in his band. The highpoint of the evening for me would be Gabby singing Hi’ilawe or Pua Lilia.
I have copied this album into my computer and created a digital copy. I would like to share this with people. I don’t want to try to sell it, which would probably be illegal. So the question is, can I just make it available for free without getting into trouble? I have both .wav and .mp3 versions; is there another format such as AIFF that would be a better choice? If this is workable, is there a way to just upload it to this site?

Actually, distributing the tracks in any manner would also be a violation of copyright, unless the material were to be out of copyright for some technical reason. (That happened to a writer friend of mine.) But I believe the Waikiki catalog still belongs to somebody with legal rights to it.
The album did have a cassette incarnation, and there was a CD Volume 2 (it's on my shelves right now). I keep thinking that there was a CD of Volume 1, but I can only find my cassette copy, and George Winston's "Blue Book" discography has a notation that it isn't available on CD, so maybe my memory is playing tricks. |

I was afraid that the copyright issue would prevent even making a free copy available. Too bad Dancing Cat or somebody can't get the rights and reissue this. It has some great music which is otherwise unavailable. |

That vinyl also contains the only known recordings of Gabby singing "He Ono" and "Ka`anoi". It's not stereo, but it's still great to have. Mahalo for reminding me I need to play tracks from it on my show again!

The LP of Vol. 1 shows up on eBay with some regularity--there are two copies listed right now, one in Canada, the other in France, both at pretty reasonable prices for OP items. I have filled in quite a few gaps in my collection by watching eBay. It requires patience, but it can pay off.

Aloha Larry, regrading Gabby's version of Pua Lilia. It is indeed very beautiful. I wonder if you have a copy of a CD made by Gabby's son Martin. The CD is called Ho'olohe. It also has a very beautiful version of this song. The rest of the CD is wonderful as well. I think you would enjoy hearing the same song performed by Gabby's son.
