A few days ago Bruddah Duke posted a Sonny Chillingworth video. I congratulated Duke for posting and he commented that there was just not enough Ki Ho'alu being played.
Just so happened that I was two days away from playing at my classical guitar teachers recitial (as a guest performer). I was signed up to do "Haleiwa, Farewell" by Arlo Guthrie but after reading Duke's comment, I changed last minute to Chillingworht's "Moe U'Hane"--because he was right. He did not know I was playing anywhere--it was just a comment.
The results were awesome!! They loved it! I had so many comments by folks from the audience that I was busy up until the time I had to head for the door. I even had one of the new students, a middle aged woman grade school teacher, ask if I had a CD of that kind of music and could she have one. I do have a home made CD that I made for family so I promised to make a copy for her.
I am so proud to have contributed to the audiences awareness and that it was so well received. Thanks for bringing it up Burddah Duke.

That is so fantastic to read about, Bob! You, and Duke, and all the players at all the levels of skill in ki ho`alu rock! |

RWD:
What a great idea and such a perfect song! so glad you did it! I took a couple of simple slack key tunes to a local song circle gathering and found a similar curiosity and appreciation for the music. It's great to get the word out when/where we can.

I'm so stoked that you did that Bob. It's so awesome to have a colleague like you not just spreading the word about ki ho'alu but introducing people to it all together!! The overwhelming positive responses you got speaks volumes of how slack key captivates the uninitiated. Of course it helps a lot if the guitarist giving those lucky folks their first taste of something we're so passionate about is as gifted a musician as you Bob. Mahalo nui loa for sharing Uncle Sonny Chillingworth's hypnotic Moe Uhane aka Dream Slack Key, Bruddah Bob.
Hey Terry it's great to have you carrying the torch too my bruddah. As the great Led always says "Jus' Press!" |

That's quite an intimidating program... congratulations for stepping out and presenting something unfamiliar. Not always easy to do. People have stereotypes of what Hawai``ian music (and hula!) is, and by giving them the opportunity to hear the real thing, we enrich our culture.
Mahalo for posting this... inspiring! |
