Oh boy, Duke, how can I possibly keep it down to 10??? Heh heh mahalo for the disclaimer too. ;) Here goes - the impossible task of naming my 10 favorite slack key songs and my favorite versions of them (since different artists play some of these - I single out whose versions make me swoon.....), in no particular order:

Mahalo Allen, Claudia, Christoso & Dave for participating. So cool how everyone's tastes differ. Hope this prompts the others to have a listen to the songs on the other people's lists. I know it will for me. More people listening to more of these songs on the lists is better for slack key. So to those of you who aren't responding to the thread & just lurking, go check out why we love the songs we've listed.
@ Dave, eh brah you only got 5 songs so far on your list. You slackin brah! (pardon the pun LOL) |

Yeah I know. I can only play half of every song I know too. Good pun. Thanks for starting this thread. Dave |

Duke, I thought I had my own 10 favorites. Now I gotta go back and re-do the list after seeing some of these post.
Dave, I can only play the other half. Maybe we can collaborate.
Cristoso, I love that one too. Let me sneak in this one to complement it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkMrfZ-KXQM&feature=related I have to watch it everytime I hear, or see something about Justin Bieber. |

@ Dave-You play half, Jay play half then I throw in half & we're on the plus side of the ledger. If it doesn't match up, we tell everybody it's a medley!!
@ Jay-That's one of the motivation's behind this thread. To let others introduce you to more great slack key pieces.
@ Andy-Nice diverse list. Lots of slackers represented there. Gabby, Uncle Ray, Ledward, Uncle Fred, Kawika & Pekelo. Mahalo for letting me represent Uncle Fred Punahoa. Lots of the big names said they like my rendition. I got started on it when I saw a 15 second clip of Sonny Lim playing it on a local TV show. Ozzie asked me what I used as an audio reference because Uncle Fred had been recorded only once & it was the Waimea Slack Key Festival long ago. I told him I just took that 15 second clip, figured out the tuning & ran with it. Ledward said I captured the essense of Uncle Fred, especially the tempo. Well maybe Uncle Fred stopped by in my dreams & threw some magic dust on my guitar 'cause I dunno where the verses came from LOL
@ Christoso-Mahalo for reminding me of that Pekelo video. I had that in my YouTube videos favorites since it first was uploaded.Taking a fresh new look now. I see that he's in Drop C or Leonard's C. Getting some amazing sound & playing only with thumb & index finger. I saw a great bass run that by the end of today I will have in my inventory of riffs for sure. Pekelo was awesome. Great combination of ki ho'alu craftmanship & that chicken skin vocals which reminds me of Gabby & Auntie Alice Namakelua.
Here's a video of my haumana Reid playing the simple Auntie Alice ki ho'alu loop with me singing "Ka Manu" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7868W2dUc4w |

Howzit Duke, interesting but tough question. Since several of my top 10 have already been mentioned by others, I thought I’d add 10 that weren’t mentioned so far. Also, thanks to you, I have a pile of CDs that I have to re-sort and put back in order on my shelf .
Aloha, Doug
1. Real Old Style – Keola Beamer (rawer version on original album, recorded when he was ~19 yrs. old; more produced but beautiful version on Mohala Hou). Lyrics have a lot of meaning for me. 2. Kimo Hula – Kapono Beamer; instrumental version of great grandmother’s (Helen Desha Beamer) classic. 3. Kona Slack Key – Keola & Kapono Beamer: Breezy instrumental duet that’s not well known (Pure Hawaiian Magic album). 4. Waialae – Gabby Pahinui and Peter Moon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlFOtAfczXM ; ‘nuf said. 5. Maori Brown Eyes – Peter Moon: Sorry, couldn’t find the link (solo live version circa 1970s(?) that used to be on YouTube). Jaw dropping solo slack key wizardry--doesn’t get better than that. 6. Nanakuli Blues/Ka Leo O Ka Manu – Liko Martin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGInT3S2Hec ; slack key and slack harmonica :). This is how you sing from da heart and soul. 7. Ki Ho’alu – Ozzie Kotani; love Ozzie’s version. 8. So Free – Olomana (written by Cindy Combs); Takes you back home to the good old days. Love the instrumentation, lyrics, and singing. 9. The Hana Jam – Pekelo Cosma and friends (Pekelo’s Hana album): Backyard kanikapila medley of old, local kine songs with good fun banter. 10. Nani Kaua’i – Carlos Andrade: Not sure if he actually recorded this commercially. He does a beautiful and distinct version in C Maunaloa, which I heard live at George Kahumoku’s Maui workshop ~2002. If you don’t know him, you should. Wonderful singer, songwriter, slack key player and Hawaiian scholar; member of the group Na Pali.

Yes, I remember that clip. It has been removed, and I miss it! |

I remember that YouTube video also of Peter Moon doing "Maori Brown Eyes" My rendition stole a couple of his passages from that version he plays in that video. isn't that the video he capoed up the taropatch tuning to the key of A.
Eh Doug, I'm a little familiar with Carlos Andrade. He wrote "Moonlight Lady" which Bla made famous on the Gabby Pahinui Hawaiian Band album.
Is "So Free" played in a slack key tuning? I always played it in standard since it came out. If it's in an alternate tuning which one is it? Standard always seemed like it wasn't quite there. |

Howzit Duke, can’t remember if Peter Moon capoed to A. If he did, I don’t know why, since he didn’t sing it—maybe it sounded better in a higher key. In any event, he sure had a lot of awesome licks that I could only dream of cockaroaching.

Yes, Carlos wrote “Moonlight Lady.” Such an iconic song from the ‘70s—probably the Gabby Band’s biggest “crossover” hit, as it was played on the pop/rock stations like KKUA and KPOI, in addition to Hawaiian stations like KCCN. Carlos also wrote “Hula Lady” (covered by many) and one of my favorites, but lesser known, “Hokule’a Hula,” which describes his travels on one of the voyages--the melody/rhythm feels like you’re riding on the canoe. Na Pali, the group he was in, also included Pat Cockett, Pancho Graham, and the late Fred Lunt on steel. The group was also part of Taj Mahal’s Hula Blues Band.

“So Free” has a relaxed, slack key feel to me. Tonight I played along with the CD in Taropatch F capoed on the 6th fret, which I think makes it key of B. Not sure if Taropatch is the tuning they’re using, but I was getting decent approximations and the mellow feeling. I wish my cello playing was better though :). Tunings aside, the big question I have is what lyrics is Jerry Santos singing in the first line. To me it sounds like, “I lay by the waterside, Sunday school, yes in the days of five.” However, the liner notes say, “I live by the water side, sun is good, and the days are fine.” What you think?
