HAWAIIAN SLACK KEY GUITARIST PATRICK LANDEZA IN SEATTLE CONCERT
On Saturday, February 15, the Seattle Folklore Society is pleased to welcome in concert one of the world’s most respected practitioners of Hawaiian slack key guitar (“kī hō`alu”), Patrick Landeza. His show, bringing you Hawaiian warmth in the middle of a Seattle winter, will be held at the Phinney Neighborhood Center (brick building) at 7:30 p.m.
Patrick Kahakauwila Kamaholelani Landeza was born and raised in Berkeley to Hawaii-born parents. He picked up guitar while in high school and learned from the Hawaiian slack-key masters, prime amongst them Dennis Kamakahi; since then, Landeza has dedicated his life to sharing this art form with the world. He recently issued his fourth solo release, “Slack Key Huaka`i,” which was the first Mainland CD to win a Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award (Hawai`i's equivalent to the Grammys).
He was the youngest recipient of the Kapalakiko Aloha Spirit award for his work with slack key. Landeza is the founder of The Institute of Hawaiian Music and Culture and is responsible for planting the seeds for many Hawaiian music performers and concert tours. He continues to nationally book Hawaiian acts, runs music shows throughout Northern California, teaches slack key in Berkeley, produces a weekly radio program, owns a catering business, and has just published his first children’s book, “Danny’s Hawaiian Journey,” about a child of Hawaiian ancestry who grows up off-island, yet wants to discover his heritage.
