Hello All!
I'm planning to do a series of Vinyl and CD reissues of authentic Hawaiian music with the intention of bringing it to a whole new audience.
A little background about myself, first. I've been in the music industry for over 18 years and have been involved in almost every aspect. I suppose I'm more known for founding/operating the Indie Rock label, Captured Tracks Records but I've always been active in the reissue community.
Last year we announced the Omnian Music Group to expand our catalog: http://www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/record-labels/6141099/captured-tracks-head-mike-sniper-to-launch-omnian-music
One of the new labels we'll be starting this year is called Asherah Recordings, devoted to World Music, Folk, Spiritual Jazz, Gospel, etc.
My planned series of Hawaiian music will be on this imprint.
The first series will be the earliest recordings, from the 20's-40's, all of which are public domain. Rather than keep the profits to myself as some labels tend to do, I'd like to donate what would be the artists proceeds to a Hawaiian Charity. My thinking right now is The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement. My plan was to include a pamphlet on the organization in the packaging, a sticker on the front to promote the charity and sending free CD copies to dispense to younger people for educational purposes.
No one from the Council has gotten back to me yet, but if anyone here has a connection with a person beyond the "info" email on the site, I'd greatly appreciate it. I'd also appreciate if anyone had thoughts as to if I should donate to a different charitable organization that's similar, if for some reason, they don't want to be involved.
I already have an extensive collection on the Public Domain recordings, but I am of course obviously open to including rarities I might not be aware of! I'm also looking for archival ephemera from the period. Photos, posters, recollections, basically anything!
Beyond that series, I had planned to move forward out of the Public Domain era and into retrospectives on various labels and artists through to the 70's.
The rights and clearances on the following labels would be super advantageous for both compiling a collection on the Story of the label in addition to complete artist's catalog (for example, the splendid Alice, Linda & Sybil LP on Tradewinds...
The labels I'd like to do compilations on as of now are:
Tradewinds Hula Records 49th State Waikiki Records
As well as any unreleased/rare recordings from the dawn of the recording age through to the early 70's.
If some rights can't be secured from the labels since they're no longer active, I'd like to pay the artists directly.
As you can see, I have a lot of plans! I appreciate you all taking the time to read this and any input you can generate.
I will be following this Topic but you can reach me directly here: mike @ capturedtracks.com
Thanks! M

Since your focus is the music and musicians of Hawai`i, may I suggest you donate proceeds to the Hawai`i Academy of Recording Arts? http://www.nahokuhanohano.org |
