As Stacey mentioned, the workshop with Keola Beamer in Los Gatos was an instructive and inspiring event. Keola came prepared with handouts covering families of tunings, tab for songs, and a discussion of wahine tunings.
His strategy for instructing the class was one I have not seen before. He divided the group into sections and had each section learn a part of the music. Then he conducted the sections to play back the completed piece. It gave us the opportunity to get the music under the fingers and the sense of accomplishment of playing for the master. This was a unique approach in my experience, and one that demonstrated Keola's commitment to providing the best opportunity for his students.
