I attended the slack key workshop taught by Ozzie Kotani and George Kahumoku, Jr. yesterday. It's so difficult for those guys to teach one hour each because the time really flies.
Ozzie went over his thoughts on learning and teaching slack key. He gave everyone 4-5 songs of tablature. Watching Ozzie play through those songs was a real treat. His playing was so nahenahe. Hopefully, I'll be able to get in to those tabs soon. No one at the workshop brought a recorder so hopefully I can get a copy of those songs and distribute them to those who want it.
George jumped right into playing and gave out tabs, lyrics, chord charts. The pace was quick and there was not a lot of talk. George's workshop was a whirlwind of sound with him leading the bunch of us. I had fun, but suspect some people were left a bit confused.
A big mahalo to the Hawai`i Cultural Foundation for organizing this event and to Ozzie, George and Moana for teaching.
George's teaching style is quick moving - without a doubt. It was a challenge locating the right handouts. I did notice that during the concert, George even struggled for a second leafing through his own lyric sheets which made me feel better.
