Hello,

Just joined the group and am interested in learning Slack Key. Have played the guitar for a while (mostly strumming and some scales). Signed up for the Keola Beamer online course and just getting started. Are there any teachers/players in the Houston area?

This is a great site!

Welcome.
Ozzie Kotani's book/cd is also something you might want to seriously consider.

Thanks for the E-mails. I sent an E-mail to Jim Garson asking about what's happening in Houston.

I'll check out the book by Ozzie Kotani; seems like a good resource.

I live in Houston too and am a beginning slack key player. Wish we had somebody teaching this style here but if we do, I don't know about it. Mark Nelson is coming to Dallas on Feb 12 and will be giving a seminar. Join us if you can.

Welcome to TP.net, Gerald!
Jim Garson is a solid intermediate/advanced player with a good feel for the nahenahe stuff. He's also a busy professor at UH, but hopefully has some time to jam with you.

Thanks again for all of the info.

I got in touch with Jim Garson who lives pretty close to me actually, and we are going to meet on Saturday. It seems that he has quite a bit of material and has been playing for a while. I'm looking forward to it.

Cotham: If you would like to get in touch you can E-mail me at greadore @ airmail.net. Would be neat if we could get together every so often with Jim. Where is the seminar being held in Dallas? Is there info about it?

Hapakid: I came across one of your songs "(Iesu Me Ke) Kanaka Waiwai and really liked it. It was very good. Is there tab/chords available for it?

Thanks, Gerald,
I just got the words for "Kanaka Waiwai" at http://www.huapala.org/Iesu_Me_Ke_Kanaka.html
and I just sang it into a recorder with a standard-tuned guitar. It's a hymn of sorts, but very popular with Hawaiian music lovers. Many artists like Olomana, Hui Ohana, Melveen Leed and even Don Ho have recorded it. I think it sounds best with some slack key behind, but I didn't know anything about slack key when I recorded it.

Aloha Gerald, welcome to the TP, and welcome to slack key music. You'll find the journey & the destination quite fulfilling in so many ways.
Texas?...it begs the question. Can you two-step to slack key? What boots, (no slippas?) do you wear? Does this cowboy hat make my guitar look fat?... just kidding.
Welcome brudda!!

Aloha, Gerald ...

I play some slack key and live in Houston (Heights area). I show up occasionally show up at area open mics with a slide player accompanyist. I'd be interested in getting together sometime. I've got some learning material - the standard books/cds - that might help. Send me an email and we'll see what happens.

Thanks for all of the replies. I have met with Jim Garson twice and its been fun. Jim is good! Being a beginner it's a litle overwhelming, but he's given me some good info and helped me with the chimes.

Scott I sent you an E-mail.
