I just got off the phone... er... the laptop, with Ray Sakeshaft in Great Britin.
He told me about Skype (http://www.skype.com) while I was in NY at the Uke Fest.
I came home, and installed the free software on my laptop.
This morning (evening, in Great Britin) I called him up and we chatted for a while.
Then he got out his ukulele, and I got out my lap steel. We played "Little Grass Shack".
I plugged in some headphones, and we could hear each other loud and clear, and so we played several more songs.
What a kick! I am posting it here, because I suspect that there are a lot more people
who have cable or DSL and have microphones on their computers. This opens up
a whole new way to kanikapila for me!!!

Sign up for Skype (the service is also free), and you can lookup "konabob" as one
of the members. If I am near my computer, it will ring when you call me, and I
will be happy to back you up on bass or steel guitar! Best time to catch me is
in the mornings (Check what time it is in Kona here ->http://www.konaweb.com)

Mahalo Ray!

Hi Bob,
Was there any delay on the connection, even a split-second delay?

Well, there has to be some delay, unless they can
reverse the speed of light and make time run backwards!!

Since the speed of light is 186,282 miles per second, if you have
two players that are 1862 miles apart, the one way MINIMUM delay
would be 1/100 of a second (10mS) with a round-trip time of 20mS.

Most times humans don't notice delays of up to 30mS so I would think
that one could easily jam at a distance of up to 1860 times three or
5586 miles. However, the software and hardware along the way
probably uses buffering which will introduce additional delay(s).

Since the route you signals will be taking is NOT a straight line
and because of the buffering along the web, times will be longer

From the wikipedia:

"A typical time as of 2004 for an Australia or Japan to US
computer-to-computer ping (which is a round trip) is 0.18 s."

This would be quite noticable to folks trying to play together
in real-time! But maybe managable since the one-way is 60mS.

I've been trying GoogleTalk. Should I try Skype too? Sounds pretty cool, KonaBob.

Rarely, Ray would cut out, but I just kept the rhythym, and after a second or two, there he was right in sync with me. There were just over 6 million Skype users online at the time.
Physics aside, Ray and I could hear each other well enough to play. In answer to your questions, Jesse and Andy; download the software and give me a call! If you don't like it, you have not wasted any money, and if it does work to your liking, you have a new way to jam with plenty kine people all over the place. I will leave my Skype running all evening in hopes that some of you call me!
Aloha,

I have now gotten "calls" from Boston, Florida, Great Britin and Seattle. All new friends who love Hawaiian music and the ukulele. So Skype has been a real blessing for those of us living in the middle of the Pacific.

That's great Konabob!

You have long been a proponent of long distance sharing.

If I had wideband at home I would "chime in" too!

Maybe this will motivate such a changeover...

Hi Lawrence and Ianui.
Yes, Lawrence. We have the technology and it's free... why not enjoy it.
Ianui, do a skype search for konabob, and give me a call sometime! I
have my computer on a lot, and I have the steel guitar handy. Don't be
shy... no one will hear us.
Aloha,

I had the pleasure of singing along on a three-way Skype kanikapila with KonaBob and Ray Shakeshaft. It raised goosebumps, and even more so when you think about the fact that we were all so far apart.

I have to say it was an incredible experience and I look forward to more.

Just a heads up - I've been told by a couple of computer nerd friends that the Skype service is now free in an attempt to get market share, but they have plans to start charging. One person said in the Fall, another said at first of the year.
