Tuesday, October 3, 2006 Herb Ohta Jr, Daniel Ho, and Keoki Kahumoku bring PARADISE to San Jose! 'Ukulele and Slack Key Workshops in San Jose Japantown
Beginning ‘Ukulele with Herb and Daniel: (6:00pm-7:30pm) Aimed towards beginners, Daniel and Herb will be teaching sections from their new instructional book, Discovering The ‘Ukulele. You will learn how to tune your ‘ukulele, strum your ‘ukulele and hold your ‘ukulele. Learn left hand technique and right hand finger-style technique, while learning the basic “c scale” and “c chords” to get you on your way to strumming a few songs.
Int. / Adv. ‘Ukulele with Herb, Daniel and Keoki: (8:00pm-9:30pm) Geared for the intermediate and advanced ‘ukulele lovers, Daniel, Herb and Keoki will teach more sophisticated fingerstyle techniques and strumming patterns, explain more advanced scales and chords, and improvisation. At the end of the class, use what you have learned and kanikapila (jam session).
Slack Key Guitar with Keoki: (6:00pm-7:30pm) To all slack key guitar lovers, Keoki Kahumoku will instruct how to tune your guitar in different slack key tunings and also instruct how to play basic two and three finger-style techniques. He will also teach you how to do harmony scales up your fingerboard & how to use them while playing a song. At the end of class, you will learn how to improvise using these techniques.
TO ALL STUDENTS ATTENDING: You will need the following to be able to attend classes: 1. Your own instruments! 2. A note pad to take notes with 3. A writing utensil 4. Your enthusiasm!

Herb and Daniel, each highly accomplished solo musicians, collaborate together showcasing their unique backgrounds and the ‘ukulele in a pure acoustic setting. The two albums feature Hawaiian standards as well as original compositions.
Fifth generation slack-key guitarist Keoki Kahumoku began performing with his father, GeorgeKahumoku, Jr., and his uncle, Moses Kahumoku, in 1990 at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel on the Big Island of Hawai‘i. Since then, Keoki has recorded three recordings with Herb Ohta, Jr. and two solo projects. His latest, 'Rise & Shine', has not yet been released but will be available at the workshop! Keoki is the only artist to have been a part of the first two Grammy Award winning Cd’s Slack Key Guitar Volume 2 and 2006 winner Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar.
