Mahalo Mark for being willing to do your workshops here. Sure beats going all the way to Seattle! Hope we get lots of interest so you'll make Eugene a regular stop! We are looking forward to having you here.

Aloha kakou -
Whew, I finally get back to Oregon last Friday & what happens? I get hit with a nasty case of food poisoning. I'm recovering, but it's been a baaaaad week.
I'm looking forward to seeing lots of Oregon folks this coming weekend in Eugene.
Here's some belated info on the concert & classes:
Evening Concert with Mark Kailana Nelson Saturday, November 11th ~ 8pm-10pm
WORKSHOPS SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 11
Intro to Hawaiian Slack-Key Guitar 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Ki ho'alu, or slack key guitar, uses open tunings and fingerpicking to play both melodies and bass. Explore Taro Patch (open G) and G Wahine tunings, Hawaiian turnarounds, ornamentation (hammer-ons, pull-offs, and slides) and those wonderful, slippery sixth harmonies. Learn some classic melodies and focus on developing a smooth, flowing style. All guitarists are welcome; basic fingerpicking skills a plus.
Intermediate Slack-Key Guitar 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. Explore the rich traditions of one of the world's great guitar styles. Learn several tunings, and discover licks and tricks typical to each one that will help you to improvise and play spontaneously, either solo or in a group. This workshop builds on the foundations presented in the previous one; any intermediate to advanced guitarist is welcome.
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 12
"Fun With Your `Ukulele:" 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Learn new ways to play familiar chords, strums and simple picking to spice up your `ukulele playing. Along the way we'll play some classic Hawaiian and hapa-haole songs and find out that big things come from small packages. Fingerstyle Solos for Ukulele 1:30-3:30 p.m., $30 The ukulele is enjoying a renaissance on the mainland, but in Hawaii it has never gone out of style. Hawaiians took to the "jumping flea" right from the start, creating music of stunning beauty and versatility. Learn to play lovely fingerstyle solo arrangements of classic Hawaiian songs, folk songs, and standards taken from Mark Nelson's best-selling new book. For ukulele tuned GCEA with a high G. You should know how to strum and play basic chords in the keys of F, C and G.
If I can, I'll be up Friday night to attend Maggie's kool kani kapila, too. See you soon!
cheers,
Mark |

Well, fun was had.
Mahalos to Maggie for all the hard work (you are one organized cookie!) & to her & Bob for the hospitality; to Buck and Evalani for the heart-inspiring music, to Pacific Winds Music for bringing the store, and to every one who braved the weather -- and the game! -- to come to the workshops & show.
Kurt gets MVP for longest drive.
So, when should we do it again?
cheers,
Mark |

Aloha Mark!
I just came up for air to log on to TP and saw your post. Mahalo nui for coming up from Apple Valley to do the workshops. Lots of great feedback from the ohana. Of course we are hungry for more, even though there was a lot to process. Let's do another one in the spring, ok? We'd love to have you back!
Yes Reid, we are fortunate to not have any heavy weather except the rain. Lucky us! |

Yes, thanks to both Mark and Maggie. Mark, your lessons and concert were indeed informative and entertaining. Maggie, great job of organizing this little musical weekend. As you two know, my wife and I were celebrating our 29th anniversary that weekend. The workshops, concert, and meeting new friends made for a very enjoyable time for us. Looking forward to seeing you both at Keola's concert.
