Aloha kakou -
I am pleased to announce The Aloha Music Camp's first week-long hula intensive retreat:
`Aha Ho`ona`auao - Moloka`i Hula Retreat A Gathering For The Understanding and Enlightenment Of The Hula Dedicated To The Memory Of Kumu Hula - John Ka'imikaua
May 13 - 20, 2007 Kaupoa Beach Village, Moloka`i
The week-long retreat will offer classes in hula, traditional Hawaiian musical instruments and crafts, Hawaiian language and chant, and musical accompaniment for hula. The Beamer family – Aunty Nona Beamer, Ceremonies and Mo‘olelo (stories); Keola Beamer, accompaniment for hula; Moanalani Beamer, hula; and Kaliko Beamer-Trapp, olelo Hawai‘i and ‘ukulele – will be joined by kumu hula from across Hawai‘i as well as Na Kupuna o Moloka‘i. The retreat will include daily classes, plus workshops, lectures, spiritual practice and hands-on experiences.
According to Keola Beamer, the name “‘Aha Ho‘ona‘auao” is a beautiful Hawaiian thought, which may be translated as “A Gathering for Knowledge or Enlightenment.”
‘Aha - gathering Ho‘o - causative prefix Na‘au - intestines, seat of knowledge ‘Ao - brightening, dawning
Students will not only study hula for both beginning and experienced dancers, but they will experience the spiritual and historical underpinnings of Hawaii’s unique dance form through specialized workshops and practice. After a week of classes and workshops focusing on the practice, crafts, clothing, implements and stories associated with hula, participants will attend Moloka‘i Ka Hula Piko, uniquely moving celebration of the birthplace of hula founded by the late kumu hula John Ka‘imikaua.
We are busy selecting kumu, setting the buget and planning the week's activities, but I can tell you this will be a truly enlightening and life-changing experience. Online registration will begin soon - and space is very limited. So I wanted to give everybody here a heads up.
Please note that the Moloka`i Hula Retreat is very different from the Aloha Music Camp -- the focus is on hula and it's place in the world. Participants will have the opportunity to learn the deeper meaning behind hula; the Aloha Camp has classes in slack key, `ukulele, craffts, hula and more.

It is an honor to be able to offer this unique program. We'll have details available on our website http://www.alohamusiccamp.com.html as soon as we can -- in the meantime please help spread the word to your friends in the hula community.
