Okay....I am the first to admit...Music theory was NOT one of my college electives.
So when Keoki took a G taro-patch tuning and slacked it even more--but still called it Taro Patch tuning..I kinda lost track... Did he go down a full step on all strings so that the relationship between the strings was the same as a G taro patch tuning but Lower? Can someone dive in here? Be gentle....as Kevin Kline said in "A Fish Called Wanda" , "don't call me stupid...."

I'm guessing that he tuned the 5th string (G) down to F. So you are correct. The intervals are the same as taropatch but in the key of F, down a whole step. |

Danny, I was downstairs for most of the ki ho'alu workshop (chatting with Herb and Daniel Ho) and I am pretty sure it was (as Andy stated) F TaroPatch (C-F-C-F-A-C). Thus if you put a capo on it (at fret 2) you are in the G Taro Patch. All the string relationships will be identical, you would just have to sing higher/or lower. This is very common when playing with ukuleles (as in Herb Ohta Jr.) The key of F on ukulele is probably the easiest key to play in and is very common but is a headache for most guitars (especially in standard tuning as you have to play the dreaded Bb chord and F Bar chord.
If you come by the Wednesday evening ukulele "kanikapizza" at Today's Pizza and Keith comes by, he will normally tune to F Taro Patch to play along with the ukuleles and put a capo on it for the keys of C and G.
Another popular tuning, especially when playing songs in the key of C (like Hi'ilawe, for example) is to slack the lowest D string down to C (C-G-D-G-B-D). This is not, however, called taro patch -- it is usually called "Drop C". This gives you the "C" note for your alternating bass pattern for the C Major chords.
Looking forward to see you at one of the SCSKS Open Mikes. You don't have to play if you are not ready. But you can hear Terry play in G Minor, Bill play his Tamarack Slack and Grunnion Running songs, Dusty do his spot on Ray Kane imitation, and Rik's nahenahe "Paka Ua". If Keith comes by, have him play Ka'a Ahi Kahului and Ku'u Home O Kahalu'u. Oh yeah, and I almost forgot, you can hear left handed Ken play right handed better than most of us right handers. Remember, every Tuesday Night at Kaisen's Hawaiian Style Grille in Oceanside, CA. |

A few years ago I attended a workshop with George Jr (Dad to Keoki). He used that tuning (F taropatch) as I recall. The reason he gave for dropping it that step was it was a more natural key for him to sing in. |

Howzit All,
Bingo! Most folks (including myself) who use this "F" tuning is just to help with their singing range...or lack-there-of ha! Like my case... I keep 2 guitars (1 six string, 1 twelve string) tuned this way all the time because I use it so much. Ray Kane used to use it frequently as well. It also is just nice that you have that nice low C bass note to use. For the record, this tuning doesn't suit all guitars, maybe just a bit too low for some axes. I also, personally speaking, prefer to use medium gauge strings in this tuning. So if your strings are flopping around and your getting too much fret buzz you might consider it. Or lighten up on your attack on the strings, or, just have your guitar adjusted to suit the tuning if you like it enough. But, hey experimentation is a spice of life. Give it a try!
A hui hou, Aloha Pumehana...

Eh Danny Boy - one more reason - can then play in F with all those uke players. Keoki's comment to us in January was that it's "easier on the guitar" Aloha! n |
