Hi Jerry,
Please tell us about the workshop and your experiences with it. If I remember right, you had a fantastic time... What about beginners?
Aloha, Julie |

I wasn't paying close enough attention, but his sister Lehua will be teaching.

Chunky, I don't know for sure who all the instructors will be this year, however, Paul Togioka will be there and of course Led. Last year we had Led, Paul Togioka, Jeff Peterson, Lehua and her partner Chuck Brunett and David Kahiapo. I think most of these people will be back but that has not been confirmed yet. Julie, The workshop is held in downtown Waikiki at the Outrigger hotel and classes start around 9am and run all day with a break for lunch. Since the workshop consists of all full days it is up to you how much tourist stuff you care to include. Last year we had only seven students and six world class instructors it was like private lessons for an entire week. To me, spending the week with Led alone was worth the price of admission. The man is just a lot of fun to be with. Led's sister, Lehua, is a very warm person with a lot of skills and was a great addition to the instructor staff as was her music partner, Chuck. Taking part in the Oahu Slack Key festival on Sunday is another plus just like in Maui with the Kahumoku workshop. As for beginners, like the other camps/workshops, there are all skill levels represented and I found that everyone was made to feel comfortable with no lack of personal attention. All instructors were very patient and willing to meet the needs of each individual. This workshop has not been promoted to the extent that the other camps have and I am not sure why except that Milton Lau once told me that he prefers to keep it rather small and intimate. The first year the workshop was held (2005) there were 22 people including a group of dlightful ladies from Japan and a fine instructor from Japan, Yuki Yamauchi, who is probably Japan's leading slack key player. Check out Yuki on Google and see how famous he really is. I think Milton would like to get the Japanese folks to attend this year. This workshop is a little shorter than the other camps but for my money it is a lot of bang for the buck. I and my coffee shop buddy, Bob are making plans to attend this year and are very much looking forward to the event. Jerry |
