I just spoke with Keoki Kahumoku. He and Herb Ohta, Jr. had a wonderful 3 day Ukulele Camp at the Pahala Plantation House on the Big Island this last weekend. And so it looks like...

The next Hawaiian Music Camp will focus on Slack Key and Hawaiian Steel Guitar!
The dates will be May 17 - May 20, 2007 and the instructors will include Grammy Award winners Keoki Kahumoku and Sonny Lim. I will be teaching Acoustic Hawaiian Steel (taro patch tuning) and there may be opportunities for C6th students to study with Sonny Lim.

Pahala is about 1/2 hour from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and the Black Sands Beach at Punalu'u. If you have never been to the Big Island, this will be a wonderful opportunity to enjoy it.

I will post here on Taro Patch, when I have the details and registration form up on the web at: http://www.konaweb.com/keoki/

Konabob - I read the blurb on your website about Keoki &Herb Jr. You say Herb has been teaching since 1992 -- that's 15 years ago!!! He doesn't even look 15 years old now!!!
Since he is not a woman, you can tell on him -- how old is he?

Oh phooey. This is just about the same time as the ka ulu lauhala o Kona .. the wonderful annual lauhala weaving conference held at Kona Village (including great kamaaina rates for participants .. chance to stay there at about 1/3 the usual price.) Will Keoki be doing his workshops again after Thanksgiving???

Me ke aloha,

Capt. Mike asked if I would be bringing my Walkingbass to Camp. I never go to a music event without it!
I have been playing with Buddy Fo and also backing up Joe Spencer here, thus my level of playing has been pushed up a few notches. I would be happy to share what they have been showing me.

Konabob, you da best! Your playing (steel and bass) is garaun-teed, and your song writing is one-of-a-kine. I so look forward to any times I get to hear you, play with you and talk story. See you in June!!
