Hi, I've been trying to teach myself Slack Key and need some guidence. I was wondering if anyone knows of a place to study in the NYC area. I'm looking for a permanent place to take lessons, but would like to hear about any workshops as well. I always find that I learn better under supervision. Ya know, gives me less of a chance to get lazy.
Thanks

Stephen,
I'm not aware of any "official" slack key guitar teachers in the area. There are a handful of slackers in NJ, NY, CT, PA that may be up for an occasional get together.
Regarding workshops, there is usually a Hawaiian music tour that comes through about once a year - maybe twice if we're lucky. Any related workshops are usually sponsored by the Hawai`i Cultural Foundation in NYC. You may want to email Nersa at hawaiiculturalfoundation @ hotmail.com and see if you can be added to their email list for the next event. I think George Kahumoku, Jr. will probably be back again in 2003 and Ledward Kaapana may be too. Otherwise check back in the Performance/Event Announcements & Reviews forum because if there is an east coast workshop, I'll be sure to post about it there. |
