Aloha Kumu,
I found your post to be very disturbing, as I also have attended many, many workshops, on the Islands as well as the mainland. During all those workshops I have only found two instances where another person was not in possesion of an "aloha spirit". Never did I have have a problem with a kumu, or kupuna, and I always approached them with respect and willingness to learn.
Without any details, you are not doing anyone a favor by raising the red flag, but rather you are casting dispersions on God knows how many truly wonderful, hard-working, honest, caring and loving individuals busting their behinds and risking fincancial ruin to put together these worskhops.
Get a grip, come out with your true issues and we'll all kibbutz on how to fix the problem. Sometimes it takes several technicians to fix a car, sometimes it takes several doctors to get a patient on the road again. But noone wants to work with an anonymous technician or doctor.

Friends, this could just be someone trolling. Trolling for flame wars happens all the time in newsgroups. I know this is upsetting for many of us, but the best thing to do to counter trolls is to let the thread die.

Aloha...I am merely the messenger for several of your Taropatch members who came to me with very sad experiences...and situations that I witnessed with them. I have emailed them and encouraged them to come forward with their stories of this Camp that I speak of. It is up to them to give names if they feel comfortable doing so. After the responses I have received on this website...I doubt if they ever will tell their sad experiences. You see...they have been members of Taropatch for awhile. I want them to come forward. I will share with you one of the experiences that I witnessed and shared with Pali (not the camper's real name). Pali came to Camp with much aloha and knowledge of the Hawaiian culture. A willingness to share and create lasting bonds of Aloha with the other campers-on a very special Island. Around other campers Pali was praised and made felt welcomed by the "teachers" and head Kumu...when alone or so the "teachers" thought (but was actually witnessed by others)...Pali was treated with such hatred and lack of Aloha. Was it jealously from the "teachers"...I don't know. I would hope not...so what was it? Pali was sincere and immediately loved by many of the campers. Pali lives Aloha to the fullest. I encouraged Pali to go to the organizers with these issues...nothing was done. It actually made it almost impossible for Pali to stay at Camp. The campers who knew Pali helped. We are told that the "teachers" are there to share with the campers for the perpetuation of the Hawaiian culture. Is this not true (of this camp) if you come already with much knowledge or reach a higher level of knowledge while there...I don't know.
Mahalo to all the Taropatch members who have emailed me the last couple of days with Aloha and understanding. They too have their stories. I encourage them all to come forward because "commercial Aloha" should not exist. Yes...it costs money for knowledge BUT if campers are paying for it then they must be met with "true Aloha".
FYI Nancy...I do know who you are and am not surprised by your words. We ALL need to constantly search our hearts for Aloha...My upbringing knows that if you do not...it can be lost.
Mahalo nui loa & Live Aloha... Aunty |

I'm not here casting aspersions... I'm not here anonymously. I don't know why anyone should be surprised at my words. You're welcome, and I do my best to live my life treating others as I would wish them to treat me. At this point, I'm not sure just what you mean by Live Aloha. You are not being kind by spreading rumors. Nor are you being fair to the many people who having chosen to make businesses by sharing their music, their families and their cultures with so many of us. Most of us made it here to taropatch.net through the workshops. And most of us feel a strong loyalty to those who have enriched our lives, and we're here to stand up and be counted. If you don't like my blunt approach, please go reread the other posts. Patronizing me does not help solve your problem any more than your original or subsequent posts do. You're right Reid - - n |

Since "kumu" repeatedly fails to answer the simple questions posed here earlier, and continues to claim that these things happened to others (and not she, now adding that they are long-time TP members - yet none of them have come forward with any real details), I have to conclude that we are dealing with (a) a troll, and/or (b) a personal vendetta; behaviors which do not reflect well on the title of "kumu." |

I hate locking topics, but let's put this one behind us. I think the key points have been made and don't see any need to continue this discussion. |
