Educated???? Dr. Menpachi; Peter Medeiros? No`eau? Duke? Jay? Braddah Ed? ll dese guyz way mo edumated den I will evah be. Dey smaht all kine ways. And mo bettaah, dey got good hahtz, too. Full of aloha. They neva make fun of us haoles for talking differently, even if one hillbilly kine.

I once had a female boss who gave me my annual performance review. She told me that I should stop acting like a dumb hillbilly. Yikes, sorry lady, but I am one dumb hillbilly; cannot change a leopards spots. She told me to stop hanging around with da guyz on the team and don't be so nice to them. I was raised that you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. She also told me to stop dressing in a feminine way -- to dress ASEXUALLY. No lace, no frills, no ruffles, no perfume, no makeup, no jewelry. Up until I had this performance appraisal, I thought I was doing a super job at work. This appraisal, frankly, sent me to the ladies room to sit in a stall and cry my eyes out. I was flabbergasted. For once, I was speechless when she told me these things. Then the next thing I knew, this appraisal results in a large cash award for me for sustained superior performance. Go figure.

Bottom line, Nancy. You know what this topic is about. Respectfully sharing your point of view is one thing. That certainly is what Duke was looking for when he posted the topic. But I will not permit you to equate educations or lack thereof by the way they choose to write posts on a web site. There was absolutely NO reason for you to add that comment. No reason other than to pretend that you are the educated one and you are superior because you do not speak that way nor do you like to speak that way. You may have had lots of Hawaiian friends. You may have had someone from the islands who helped you make your son, but you know what? You are still a haole. Injection does not make one Hawaiian, nor does it give you freedom to be insulting. And being haole does not give you the right to sneer at someone who by choice, speaks differently than you.

This comment to my friends was so insulting that if you were here, I might woulda hadda been restrained. The big difference between them and you is that they are nice and kind. Hah - and educated.

I know I am being rude right back at you and that is something I cannot abide in other people and I am slightly ashamed for being so now. Sometimes, though, I've just gotta stomp my feet and say something.

Before this becomes even more inflammatory, can I suggest that everyone offended by Nancy's comment take a deep breath and a step back, give her the benefit of the doubt, and let her explain herself before commenting further? She has obviously touched some deep chords in some of you, but I doubt it was intentional or malicious. A little aloha (the cornerstone of this community) goes a long way here.

I usually donʻt talk about myself. I have two count em two BA degrees. I think it is fun to have a pidgin post. Maybe you donʻt know but a literary journal from UH called ʻBamboo Ridgeʻ encourages writing in Pidgin and I feel that Menpachiʻs story would warrant publication. I herd the guy has a doctorate. Ans as for stepping back I donʻt think so. We stepped back before and we lost a nation. I donʻt know why some people have to always assume we are not smart if we choose to have fun in pidgin. Friends that is one form of our

native language and no amount of explanation will excuse an

inadvertant attack on us. Why we always gotta step back when

we get insulted. who the heck thinks we always wrong when we defend

our selves. I have said that pidgin is a bonafide language it is not

a dialect. If any body nevah lern that yet keep your yap shut.

Its ok too disagree but it is like food if you no like da taste no

eat em. But no get on your high horse and tell us you no like da

thread.

Jus no read da ting we no need you foa tell us what is wrong wit us.

Who was dat?dey wen say "why I play guitah","cause good fun""why I do dis",and"why I do dat, cause good fun".Which reminds me why we like talk pidgin cause good fun.Brings out all kine stories, even some good memories, and many times a good laugh.I can tell deas alot of intelligent people here, reminds me of da saying,a big man shows how big he is by how he treats the little man.In that I mean, how smart you are has nothing to do wit joining in and simply talkin story, whether in pidgin or not.I goin be honest wit everybody,I once thought dat we had high intellect clicks here at TP,and dat lack of reply was due to,in my mind dat dey was bettah dan me.But I'm happy to say,boy was I wrong.I'm glad I was wrong, because I learned from dat.I only hope maybe someone will realize that they too was wrong, and maybe learn from dat along da way.Aloha braddah jay

Actually I have been very impressed with the level of education shown by the posters in this thread. First of all, there is the subtlety of the humor- perhaps it is partially because I was not raised with pidgin but my own sense of humor leans towards the subtle and yet a fair bit displayed here sailed right over my head until referenced by other posters. Hoof hearted? That took a few days to click, even though it was the subject of many posts.

Equally interesting to me was the transliteration of many terms that one doesn't normally hear in everyday pidgin conversation. I have been quite facinated by the various spellings chosen. The variations in everyday terms- even by the same poster, or within a single post- has also been interesting, as well as the cultural and geographic variations (some intentional, some subconcious).

And of course, best of all have been the stories and personalities shared- I feel I have gotten to know the posters far better than I would have otherwise. And some of the stories and comments have been so funny! And some so deep. I just love the way people have loosened up on this thread!

Of course, the thread title asks if posting in pidgin is a turn off, and that naturally invites the answer that it is. Many people, like Pua Kai, must find it difficult or impossible to follow- in fact many fluent pidgin speakers can have trouble following the written form! So it is natural for people to be turned off by it, in spite of the invitation to jump in and join the fun. Just as I am turned off when I hit a web page in French, which I don't really understand. It is the statement "I imagine I'll get shouted down by those who don't want to admit they are educated" that people find offensive. Frankly I see everyone here gleefully expressing the truth that use of pidgin has nothing to do with education. In fact, they joyfully flaunt their education while talking in pidgin.

Pua Kai, if you took the time to plumb the depth and subtlety of the conversation occuring here, you never could have equated pidgin with a lack of education. Excessive fart jokes aside, this has been a deep sharing with very bright people. I am sorry you have been unable to participate at a level where you can see this; no one was meant to be excluded but with any language there are a majority of people who can not understand. But realize that just because someone is speaking Maidu, Samoan, Latvian, or pidgin Hawaiian, the fact that you do not grasp the depth and full meaning of what is being communicated does not mean that those speaking something besides "Hollywood English", even though they are capable of talking like they are from California, are necessarily uneducated or even pretending to be.

I haven't been fishing since my grandfather took me, somewhere in Iowa, when my age was still in single digits.

I'm educated in many areas - but lack the knowledge required to speak pidgin.

There. I think I'm caught up on this heavy thread now.

Excellent comments by all. I apologize if I went too far . But in my youth I was one down in the trenches activist which is where I met bother Peter by the way. He has never said as much as he has since this thread went to pidgin. I learned more of what is in his heart and mind here than any of my personal encounters with the gentleman. And I am talking about over 30 years by now.
Menpachi, Ypo, Guava man youguys are eloquent when you choose to be. As well as Jay and Duke. But it is true that we all opened ourselves to scrutiny by the public eye. And I admit I was touched by everything here. So my activist self jumped up and said
"whoa no talk stink about my frens liʻdat!"
It is just we always get to be the ones who have to say sorry. I donʻt regret what I said and I was not attacking any one specific. I was attacking an attitude that has prevailed since Capt. Cook first arrived on our ʻaina hānau. So I guess i still have a raw nerve somewhere.

Thank you all for you thoughtful response. I just get too involved sometimes. But I am Hawaiian and proud of it.

I donʻt know how this changed to double space but I donʻt know how fo undo dis buggah.
