Wow, Mark, I couldn't even begin to guess! I guess since I'm quite a bit older than you, I played in an era when band names still made sense, like the Techniques, The Escorts, etc. But I'll be looking to see what others guess! |

Eh, Mark. Your list could be the basis for a thesis on late 20th Century music! Ear catching names! |

First time wasn't a rock band, but we wen try out as wun folk band. Back in about '65 or '66, up Kapalama, me, my bud Wayne Kahula from Hana (bless his soul) an Keola Beamer (yup...dat's da one) wen try out fo one talent show one time as folk artists. We nevah do too good at da audition; we nevah even make da show. An had some real junk stuff on da show, an we STILL neva make 'um. We was doin' Kingston Trio stuff...sounded good at practice (I tink). |

Hi everyone! I thought I'd revive this nearly year-old post with an update. After dozens of emails and phone calls to my former band mates and one false start, four of us are finally getting together in Las Vegas this coming Sunday 9/27. As I said before, I haven't seen or talked to some of these guys since 1968! Fortunately the friend who lives there in Las Vegas still performs and has all the equipment we need so we don't have to fly with our instruments. Only one of the guys that I was able to contact wasn't able to make this trip but perhaps we'll do this another time. The only firm plans we have are to meet at my friends home to talk story and jam and also to attend his performance at the Imperial Palace. I'm so excited I can hardly contain myself! I'll let you know how it all goes. |

We spent a little time(and dough) at the Imperial Palace 3 or 4 years ago. They had what they called "Dealer-Tainers". You could sit at a blackjack table dealt by James Brown,Elvis, Dolly etc. About every half hour the Dealer would jump up on the table to do a song. And they were really good at the style of their namesakes. The whole place would stop to watch. Was good fun, but the cards did me wrong. They had a real nice Luau there, too. And a collection of old & classic cars. Unko Paul |

Thanks Andy and Retro!
Hey Paul if you went to the luau at the Imperial Palace then you probably saw my buddy playing and singing! He's been doing that luau for 17 years since shortly after he moved there! And they do still have that collection of cars.
Dog, that looks like a cool band! Like you said.....keep on rockin'! |

I was one of the girlie-girls who did rock back then. Played in a band with 4 handsome boys! One was my (now passed on) little brother, another was my first ex-fiancee and the others were good friends from college.
Wore a leather mini-skirt, played keyboard, sang and tried to learn drums. Played at a show just before Big Brother and the Holding Copmpany (with Janis Joplin) came on. So I can actually say I opened for Janis!
Was friendly, (but not as much as I would have liked, he was always playing when our school held dances) with Billy Kreutzmann, who would later go on to do Grateful Dead.
Was very, very shy before playing with this band. It's difficult to be shy when you're up on stage.
Yes, I am 62. Was in college during the Viet Nam era, lost buddies over there, and those who did come back were never the same...

I'm two years older than you Julie and had many of the same experiences, though I never wore a leather mini-skirt LOL! Playing at high school dances and talent shows, military clubs, parties, community functions, battles of the bands and such....remember those? Not only were those were great times but it helped me pay for college too! And yeah, I spent all of 1969 in the jungles of Viet Nam near the DMZ and lost buddies there too.
Here's a pic of one of the bands I played with taken some time in the mid-sixties at one of those high school dances. The drummer there is now with Olomana.

John,
If I could I would shake your hand and thank you for your sacrifices in Nam. I'm so grateful that you came back alive. And so why in the world are you in Olympia now? It's far away from any Hawaiian cocopalms...
Sweet picture!
Julie
Oh, by the way, in 1969 I was working at Fairchild Camera and Instruments, Research and Development group, when they asked me to do the layout design for a "fuse-timer". I asked my boss if that would be used in Viet Nam, and when he said yes, I refused, put my job on the line (but didn't lose it). |

I played guitar in several bands in my youth. That James Burton pickin' the leads and rythms for Ricky Nelson on the Ozzie and Harriet Show got me started. I recently picked up this DVD at Frys Electronics. 28 of the TV jams.:
