Unfortunately, Andy's Bart Simpson t-shirt doesn't give him a hardcore rocker image. Maybe it's an East Coast thing? .

I was a founding member and played with them two years. Then again for another year later on. I was the bass player but apearently they do not have many pictures. Maybe I should send them a few. I never wanted to go full time with it.

I played three solo slack key pieces at their 30th year reunion. That was an absolute blast. I got to meet a lot of band members.

BTW, I took a lot of their band photos after leaving. Most of the B&W pics were taken (developed and printed) by me on medium format film.

Well I just got back from Las Vegas last night and our reunion was everything I expected it to be and so much more! It seemed like we were all the same guys we used to be when we were around each other in high school…..just 45 years older, a little bit wiser, a few pounds heavier (some more than others) and with a bit less hair on our heads! We were all comfortable with each other from the moment we met at the airport and joked around like we always did before. It really seemed like we had just seen each other yesterday! We spent the first evening at dinner just catching up on the happenings in each others lives and arranged to get together the next day to have breakfast and then spend the next couple of days jamming.

When we got to our friends home, he had all the instruments set up and ready for us to play. Unlike me and one of the others, two of the guys have been playing music and performing regularly all those years so they had grown to be much more professional musicians. But we all fell into our original slots when we sat down to play together that first day. These days I play mostly slack key and hardly ever play standard tuning any more, so it amazed me how much of the old music came back once we got started. Of course I made mistakes and forgot a lot of things but after a while it felt like when I would just relax and let my fingers go without thinking they somehow would find the right place to be.

We played the old Ventures instrumentals that we used to as well as all the old songs that we used to sing. On the second day I set up a camcorder and recorded about a dozen of the tunes just so we could all have a copy to reminisce with once we all got home. The trick will be getting them off of my Sony onto a DVD that can be played on any DVD player.

We spent the better part of all those days just playing together and at night we’d grab a quick dinner somewhere and then go casino hopping looking for live lounge bands to watch and listen to. As you probably know, Las Vegas is full of them! I had not been to Las Vegas since 1994 and I remember it being a zoo then but WOW what a major zoo it is now! I’ve never seen so many drunks in one place roaming the streets. A couple of the karaoke places we stopped at were hilarious! All these intoxicated people were actually getting up on stage in front of the crowd and looking like they thought they actually sounded good. I guess most people in the crowd probably couldn’t tell the good from the bad anyway in the condition they were in and they cheered loudly after every performance. We did actually hear a few really good singers though. Whenever we heard a live band, we’d sit there and critique them just like we used to do back in the day. The performance that sticks in my mind the most was Dian Diaz with a house band in a lobby lounge at the Bellagio. The entire show runs continuously from one song smoothly into the next throughout the entire set. It was very tightly choreographed and all of the musicians were very good. Only the male singer whose name I don’t remember has an “attitude” and seemed like he didn’t fit in with the rest of the group.

We all had a terrific time and agreed that it was well worth the time and expense to meet and that we’d have to do this again at a not too distant date in the future, especially knowing that we’re all 64 years old already!

Aloha,
John A.

By the way, I forgot to mention that I really enjoyed looking at all those old pictures and hearing everyone else tell stories about their bands! Boy those were fun times weren't they?

Aloha,
John A.
