After having several folks ask me about doing a little `ukulele
teaching, I've finally decided to dip my toe in the water, with help
from Uncle Rod Higuchi and the crew at Dusty Strings. So, here's the
details on two workshops we'll be presenting in January; please help
us to spread the word ---

Instructors: Rod Higuchi & Gregg Porter

12:15 - 2:15 pm --- `Ukulele for Absolute Beginners ---
Did you get an `ukulele for the holidays and need to know what to
do with it? Been wanting to play an instrument, but didn't know where
to start? Got the desire to bring a tropical touch to your wet winter?
Try the little four-stringed charmer that has long been considered the
easiest instrument to learn. In this workshop, two of the leaders of
the Seattle `Ukulele Players Association (SUPA) will get you started on
the basics - learning your strings, tuning 'em up, and getting a few
chords under your belt, so you can actually play a song by the time you
leave the room. Recommended for beginners only.

2:45 - 4:45 pm --- Hawaiian Songs for `Ukulele and Voice ---
So, you already know some basic chords, and have discovered how
much you like to sing and play your uke. Yet every time you bring out
the instrument, someone asks if you know any Hawaiian numbers. Don't
let your fear of the language keep you from getting a couple Island
songs under your musical belt. Two of the leaders from SUPA (Seattle
`Ukulele Players Association) will help you through a couple of classic
songs, with easy chording. A little lesson in language, pronunciation
and history will give you some background, and you'll discover how easy
it is to figure out how to sing in Hawaiian - maybe you'll be able to
accompany a hula dancer soon! Recommended for players who have some
comfort with a handful of chords and can sing while playing.

UPDATE: Registration is now open at Dusty Strings. Info on their webpage at:

http://www.dustystrings.com/shop/workshops-winter08.shtml#79

To register, you can visit their store (Dusty Strings Acoustic Music Shop at
3406 Fremont Ave. N, Seattle WA 98103), 10-6 Monday-Saturday or 12-5 Sunday;
call 206-634-1662 with a Visa or Mastercard handy; or mail them a check, payable
to Dusty Strings, to 3406 Fremont Ave. N, Seattle WA 98103, (including a note
with your name, phone number and the name of the workshop). Advance
registration is recommended for all Dusty Strings workshops.

The Absolute Beginners workshop is geared to be just that - for `ukulele
virgins, if you will. If you can already play a little bit, you'll get bored
very quickly! The Hawaiian Songs one will not be very complicated, either, but
you should have some basic chord proficiency under your belt.

Thanks for your help in spreading the word on these - my first foray into
teaching `ukulele!

=Gregg=

Sweet! (Although I can't play and sing at the same time yet )

Would really love to be there but I'll be coaching at my son's hockey tournament that weekend. The schedule is unknown at this point but if there's a window of opportunity I'll take it. If not I hope it's a HUGE success and it's offered again!

Mahalo,
Tad
