Aloohhhaaa!!
I've had so many folks ask when we were going to get more Hawaiian Mele out east, and FINALLY we are on our way!
Bringing a small piece of what we do every winter at the Kahumoku Ohana Hawaiian Music and Lifestyle Workshop on the Big Island, we are bringing the teachings, the stories, and the Aloha to you. So, join us for this wonderful opportunity to embrace the love that these amazing artists have to offer.
This intensive Hawaiian culture workshop is a full three days of music from some of the very best. Here is the line-up and a little bit of what they are going to share:
Slack Key Guitar Basics – Keoki Kahumoku (Beginning) In true Ki ho’alu tradition, Keoki will pass on how this cultural custom was taught to him. Hawaiian Slack Key, back yard kanikapila became a family tradition. The only way you hoped to get any instruction was if your uncle took the time to show you. Otherwise, it was all about watching, listening and imitating. Grab a guitar and sit with Keoki for a while as he shows and helps you through basic tunings and songs that you may already know!
Slack Key Guitar Advanced – Keoki Kahumoku (advanced) Learn various slack key tunings through songs of Hawaii. A fifth generation Slack key Artist,Keoki has been fortunate to carry on the songs and tunings of his ancestors which he hopes to share with you. Various tunings and tablature will be covered.
Ukulele Basics – Herb Ohta, Jr. Herb will share tips on how to hold an ‘ukulele, how to pick notes, strum a basic rhythm, plus give a little introduction into music theory to help you develop a little more confidence to go to the next level. Herb will also show you a variety of strumming techniques and how to place accents on different beats so when playing a song more than once, you have fun options to stylize it and make it all on your own.
Intermediate/Advanced Ukulele – Herb Ohta, Jr. You will sound like a pro after learning how to pick through Hawaiian vamps using Herb’s particular feel. In this workshop, Herb will be teaching Hawaiian Turnarounds in the Key of “C” and show how to use them in a Hawaiian Song and even a contemporary song. Why not make a contemporary song sound Hawaiian? Also learn how to transpose music to perform these turnarounds in other keys. Herb may also touch on Song Arranging; into and endings and how to choose the notes to pick to develop a melody through chords.
Hawaiian Language and Kaona (poetry) in Music – Darci Baker Learn a brief history of the language, as well as the alphabet, pronunciation and basic phrases. Also learn words and phrases commonly used in Hawaiian songs. Learn to sing a song using correct phrasing and pronunciation. Using the unique characteristics of Hawaiian poetry, Darci will examine familiar, as well as unfamiliar songs to see Kaona (hidden meanings) are used. Hawaiian Choir – Darci Baker Sing from your heart, let your voice ring! Students will be separated into soprano, alto, tenor and bass voice parts and signing within those sections. Get an accelerated version of an intro to beginners choir - pitch, tone, timing, sight-reading, etc. We will be learning at least one song sung in a traditional Hawaiian choral style.
From Lineage to Land to Lyrics - Walt Keale Hawaiian music has always been deeply rooted to the land ('aina). This connection is apparent through songwriting techniques in which artists use kaona, or hidden meaning to express cultural significance, ancient traditions and ethnic values. Keale invites participants to begin their own personal exploration using a traditional model for learning which emphasizes the techniques and values of ancient Hawaii. This method of teaching connects the participant to the natural resources of an area to gain a better understanding of the cultural significance of the 'aina (land) to Hawaiian music and lyrics. Instruction will emphasize Hawaiian language, history, storytelling and poetry in ancient and modern Hawaii.
Your cost includes all meals, Kanikapila, front row concert seats, and the wonderful sharing of Aloha!
Craig and I will be there also!!! So, we hope to see old friends, friends of friends, relatives, and meet a whole lot of new ones!
Don't hesistate to give me a ring with any questions about the workshop! It will be a wonderful time of sharing!
Keoki, Herb, Darci, Keale, Craig and I are all looking forward to seeing everyone! Blessings and much Aloha from us all!

Thanks Alana always for your support!
Yes, Keoki is so ready to see everyone! He mentioned that it is because of everyone's love and prayers that carried him through. He knows now it is his duty to share all that he can to perpetuate the culture and be sure he passes on as much knowledge as he can with as many folks who enjoy the spirit of Aloha. |
