Back in December I posted some YouTube links of the very talented Evan Tom and his band. Yesterday, I saw them performing at the Northern Cal ‘Ukulele Festival, where they played a very beautiful set. Evan recently turned 15 but plays like a seasoned pro and is getting better every time. I am very impressed by his musicality and how cleanly he plays—even when he plays the fast stuff, it’s never rushed, and he always plays with a lot of feeling and aloha. In addition, Evan does all of the arrangements for the band.
Although videotaping was not allowed at the festival, here are clips of Evan and the band rehearsing two of the songs that they performed, “I Fell in Love with Honolulu” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMBMuILSTVM&feature=channel ) and “Samba de Orfeu” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNKwfa89yK0&feature=channel ). The first song was dedicated to his grandparents, and particularly to his grandmother, who is originally from Oahu.
The other talented members of the band are sister Lauryn (6-string ‘ukulele), uncle Marc (guitar), and my buddy Joe Ho (8-string ‘ukulele). Although camera-shy Lauryn was hiding behind the file cabinet, if you watch carefully you can catch a glimpse of her wonderful uke playing hands . Joe, what’s with the winter coat? It’s springtime in California, brah!—Evan doesn’t look cold in his t-shirt.
In addition, I was talking with Evan’s mom yesterday, and she mentioned that one of the highlights of last year’s trip to Oahu was when Led Kaapana invited Evan to join him on stage (Kona Brewing Company) for a few songs, with Evan playing steel guitar no less!
Anyhow, can’t wait to hear more from Evan and the band.
Aloha,
Doug

Eh Doug,
Evan is definitely jamming again here. It's good seeing kids like Evan here starting early on and expanding the repertoire into other kinds of music showing the diversity of the uke. Keep it up Evan. BTW it's good to see Joe here also representing the Norcal guys.

Here are some recently posted YouTube videos of the young and talented Evan Tom and his band. Check out his new steel guitar skills. When those videos were taken, I think he had only been playing steel for 5 or 6 months.
- “How D’Ya Do” (A. Iona) – Evan (14 yrs. old) on steel guitar, April 2008, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1Ez5yzVXBE&feature=related .
- “Hilo March” (W. Pele) – Evan (14 yrs. old) on steel guitar, DaSilva’s ukulele shop (Berkeley), April 2008, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsli2fUogz8&feature=channel .
- “TNC” (T. Fernandez, N. Nahinu, C. Montero) – Evan (13 yrs. old) on ‘ukulele, L&L Restaurant, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjMgTwN5quI .
