This is very exciting. Thanks to Hiram, the Taropatch Kanikapila will be a formal part of the Aloha Festival program.

Last year, after Hiram's 'ukulele workshop, a bunch of us Taropatchers "made house" in the Education Tent and started an impromptu kani. Several passersby joined in, including a woman from Europe who bought her first 'ukulele at the festival.

Hiram was supposed to be taking his gear down and packing the car, but fortunately for us he and his lovely wife Kit couldn't resist joining in. Eventually, a small crowd gathered around the tent to listen to the jam and sing along. There was something very special about singing and sharing songs with strangers--what better way to spread aloha, share the culture, and make new friends?

So dust off that "He Mele Aloha" book and start practicing. We hope to see a lot of you Taropatchers there.

Aloha,
Doug

Hey Taropatchers,

The First Annual Taropatch Kanikapila is officially on the Aloha Festival Workshop Schedule, with a nice link to the Taropatch website: http://www.pica-org.org/AlohaFest/ed_tent_schedule_2009.htm . Nice announcement Hiram! Maybe we'll get some new members to join the 'Patch. I wonder if Andy will fly out for this historic event....

Aloha,
Doug

Aloha...We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the kanikapila next week. I will have a PA for featured players if needed. Otherwise, no amplifiers. If we play soft during the pa'ani we shouldn't have a problem hearing the solo. The ed tent is next to the parking lot so you can keep instruments, music stands, books, etc in your car until you need them. I suggest bringing a blanket to cover your stuff in the cars so as not to tempt theives. Don't forget to bring jackets in case it is cold. We will also be choosing players who would like to perform on the main stage next year with the Taropatch Slack Pack(or some other name). Don't be bashful, come and share your aloha and mele.

Hi Cathe... I notice you will be performing on the main stage with Na Leo Nahenahe Singers on Saturday at 10:30am. I'll see you then. I go on right after you guys. I'm playing slack key guitar and ukulele. I'm going to do Kawika on the guitar and Kuu Home Kahaluu on the uke with harmonics and all. I hope you try to make it on Sunday. You are one of the best wahine ki ho alu players in the bay area. Go try stay come represent...

In addition to the "official" Taropatch Kanikapila on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2:00-3:00P+, some of us Taropatchers are still planning to arrive at the festival early (9:00A) to have an informal kanikapila and/or slack key noodling in the workshop tent. All are welcomed to join in. The first act on the big stage starts at 10:30A, featuring Taropatchers Sil da Trill and GUke backing up Aunty Kalena's halau, so we know they'll be around early.

Anyhow, here's a reminder on some of the benefits of getting to the festival early:

(a) You get choice parking close to the vendors and the workshop tent (easy to store/retrieve your instruments throughout the day), (b) You can kapu a spot close to the stage, (c) You can shop before the big crowd hits, (d) You can eat a Loco Moco for breakfast , and (e) You can start your day right with a kanikapila!

See you on Sunday!

Doug

What a huge success for the 1st Annual Aloha Festival Kanikapila!
As good as it was to see fellow Taropatchers, and Kahumokans :), it was even more awesome seeing newbies joining us and busting out brand new ukes just bought at the festival. Economy down, uke sales up. Thanks to bruddah Hiram and Doug, Kit, Kaleo, and the fellow Aloha Festival planners extending their warm Aloha who helped make this happen. Was choice seeing how the earlier accounts of Hawaiian music history, the "family style" approach, coming to light again with this newfound group.

Looking forward to next year and making some new friends....
