My other half got suspicious when the "Slack Key Masters" website had no artists listed after August 1 for the weekly performances in Napili, and wrote to them asking what's up. Here's their reply, I suppose a sign of the times:
Very astute observation! We are just about to publicly announce that the Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Concert Series is going on temporary hiatus starting September and re-opening our weekly performances on December 30. No doubt the lag in the economy has severely reduced the number of visitors to the islands and even the ones that are coming are being much more frugal. However, we have been doing okay and plan on staying in business for many years to come so we will be taking this traditionally slow business period to rejuvenate and renew the show in order to really give our clientele even better shows and better value. So the performances will be temporarily suspended but behind the scenes, the producers are already busily revamping the program and concept. Our new CD comes out this week (check out our website: slackkey.com) so we are definitely busy and remain a healthy business! We'll be updating all of our fans on the website and I hope to add even more information and news while we are on hiatus. Thank you so much for writing and for being such a great supporter. We appreciate it. Pass the word that the weekly performances will be back starting December 30 and that we are not going out of business -just "remodeling" in order to be even better and stronger when we return!

MASTERS OF HAWAIIAN SLACK KEY GUITAR CONCERT SERIES RENEWS DURING HIATUS WITH A DECEMBER 2009 RETURN
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (August 3, 2009)
NAPILI, MAUI-- In 2003, the weekly Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Concert Series began fulfilling a passion and mission of promoting and supporting traditional Hawaiian music in a consistent venue. Since that time over 300 consecutive weekly performances have been produced, welcoming over 35,000 guests to the shows. Along the way recognition and validation has been received in the form of four Grammy nominations for Best Hawaiian Music Album, winning three Grammy awards; winning the Hawai`i Music Awards and a Keep It Hawai`i Recognition Award, confirming that the music and stories coming out of this concert series are authentic and of the highest caliber.
Concert co-producers Wayne Wong, Paul Konwiser and George Kahumoku Jr said, "Thinking of the future, we want to be able to do these wonderful shows for years to come. But with visitors on Maui at record low levels, and a normally slow fall season approaching, we've decided to take a break, catch our breath, and come back even stronger. We are going to suspend our weekly Wednesday performances at the conclusion of the August schedule, and restart them on December 30, 2009."
During the break the production team will be working on improving and evolving the show to make it even better. In addition, the team just released their newest CD, Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar -Volume 2, the fifth compilation of live music captured at the weekly Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Concert Series at The Napili Kai Beach Resort on Maui.
The co-producers emphasized. "We're grateful to our audiences, our wonderful musicians, and the Maui community for supporting our show. We'll be back in December with a show that will be better than ever. See you then!"
More information and the new performance schedule will be posted on the website at www.slackkey.com.

This is very bad news for me. We are going to Oahu and Maui in October. I was planning on going to attend the concert in Napili. Now I have to go in search of music ...... |

| Les, there is so much happening on Oahu alone. Check out the new Kanikapila Grille at the Outrigger Reef hotel. Cyril Pahinui, Weldon Kekauoha, Martin Pahinui and a whole bunch of others are playing there regularly |

Mitch: Thanks, I guess we will overload the music on Oahu, then chill on Maui. Also, thanks a lot for posting "Ka Uluwehi O Ke Kai" on YouTube. I have learned to play it on the ukulele and guitar, now we can play it for our dancers... Looking forward to learning more from you. Mahalo, Les
