Yes, rest up good. Don't dwell on the negatives. Like the old non-Hawaiian song goes (there probably is a Hawaiian one too): "keep on the sunny side of life".

I can relate to your latest medical adventures Wanda. I had both sides done three months apart. That was two years ago now and I still have some numbness along the jaw line--I don't think it will ever completely go away. Outside of that, it was easy and not very traumatic. I did not have much pain after though and was good on just aspirin/tylenol.
Wishing you a pain free recovery.

Bob

Aloha Wanda,

Hey you take care of yourself. I've been doing great with my diabetes and looking forward to tour this spring with George and Keoki Kahumoku as well as my son David. This father and son tour is looking promising. Scheduled for 3/24 - 4/4 2010.

It will probably the last for a while for David who just got a new job working for Bank of Hawaii. I hope it will be a good one for the new father to be....still waiting for my granddaughter's arrival. Any day now!!!!

Aloha Ke Akua,
Dennis

Mahalo for the kind wishes, you guys.

Dennis - glad to hear the diabestes is under control. I am telling all you folks, diabetes is a horrible disease. It just sits there quietly screwing up your whole body. You don't know what ugly stuff it is doing to your body until it is too darn late. They say the tighter control you keep of your blood sugar, the less complications. Well, maybe. I sure hope for most of you it works that way. But as a person who lost weight from 220 to 150 and even below (now), did exercises, A1C readings showing excellent control, it screwed up kidneys, heart, eyes, nerves and anything else you can think of that can get screwed up.

Eat fish and poi. I think that might be the thing that would have saved all of us diabetics. Fish and poi.

Wanda,

Please take this with the Aloha with which it is intended. I am truly interested in seeing that you get healthy and stay that way. It is obvious that many others feel the same way by the touching and helpful repliies to this post. Losing that much weight, getting you A1C levels under control, exercising, etc. are extremely admirable. Keep it up!!!!

I donʻt know if your statement about eating fish and poi was to sound "cool" with the Hawaiian community, who have one of the highest percentages of diabetes in the world; an educated response; or glib. No matter. For a diabetic, one can eat those things, but moderation and balance is the key. Many of us on TP, suffer from your maladies, or a portion thereof. Many have others. You choose to write about yours, so please try to think before you post.

Poi, according to the American Diatetic Association guidlines would fall under the Starch exchange.1 Starch serving is 15 grams of carbohydrate. That would amount to 1/4 cup of Poi, at 65 grams per cup. 6 servings of Starch per day are allowable, so eat it accordingly. With a Glycemic Load of 28 (100 total for a day), I wouldnʻt eat all my Starch as Poi. Itʻs truly a great vegetable, as are Yucca Root, Sweet Potatoes, Potatoes, beans, rice, etc, but all in proportion.

As for Fish. We all know the benefits of fish. 4 to 6 ounces per day are allowable under the Meat food exchange guidelines. This is total from all meat or meat substitite sources.

We all have to make our own choices. Heaven knows, Iʻve made some poor ones and am paying for them. Please do not embark on any eating regimen without consulting with a professional.

Stay healthy my friends.

Dog - you are right to take me to task. I did say what I said rather glibly -- I thought the most innocous foods I could think of would be plain fish and poi -- protein without much other bad stuff; carbohydrates without much other bad stuff.

It was also said with a bit of exasperation as well. A visit to the doc yesterday revealed that I do not have control over my blood pressure -- in close progression very high, very low, very high, very low -- so much so that I am almost ready to throw the damn machine in the trash and stop checking at all. I am starting to get frustrated because I have done what "THEY" tell me to do, change diet, take this pill and that pill and that other pill, have this surgery, get this shot every week, don't eat this, don't drink that, only have this much water; no now drink this much water, etc., etc., etc.

I am feeling sorry for myself that things do not get all better when you do what the medicos say to do. I know one of my hanai brothers in Hawai`i feels the same way. You get every treatment they tell you. And sometimes stuff doesn't get better.

Please -- I did not mean to make light of any of this nor to sound flip and glib about a Hawaiian diet. Or health problems because of lifestyle changes that happened to Hawaiians because of western influence.

OK, pau. Nomo Wanda health stuff. Sorry.

Me ke aloha
Malama pono,
Wanda

It's always a challenge, dear Wanda, because we are all constructed a little differently from each other. Docs usually start with the treatments and meds that have worked for the greatest number of people at the lowest cost (financial and in side-effects); when that doesn't work or doesn't solve everything, they try the next one down the line, and so on, until your personal balance and treatment are developed.

And it can take a lot of time and a lot of frustrating suffering - but it beats the alternative of not getting treatment, and letting your conditions kill you (or at least greatly diminish your quality of life).

It all fits that unpleasant category called "change." We all have trouble adjusting to change - especially when it hits so close to our personal and to-date ways of living. But change is inevitable (except from a vending machine).

I'd much rather hear/read you complaining about the headaches of testing and failed treatment ideas than have you be one of those folks who just uses their health issues as an excuse to not enjoy the activities that appeal to them, all the while refusing to make the personal adjustments to improve their conditions. (Everyone here knows that type, yeah?)

Imua, Wanda, imua.

I, among many, enjoy your banter. You jes keep talkin' story an' liftin' spirits.

On a serious note, this book was written for Hawaiians an' it's FREE!:

I told my doctor that if he could keep bricks from falling off buildings and hurting folks, that would be a good thing. Because one size doesn't even fit most, a lot of tweeking has to go on. Keep searching for what will work for you, with the doctors' help. Be informed. Look at the advances just in the past few years. No give up.
