Here's a recollection I like to share ... I was working on a weeklong assignment in Hanalei Bay a few years ago, and on the last day, I found out John Cruz ("Shine On") was going to be playing a concert right there at a little bar in walking distance from my place! It was like a dream come true!!
The concert was SO EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!! And even had two songs by surprise guest Ernie Cruz!! ("I Like Lychee") How could it get any better?!!!
They were BOTH in top form... so deeply emotive in the slow songs.. and jammin' good on the uptempo songs! Even invited everyone in the audience to come for a moonlight surf in the waves after the concert!
Only things that could've made it better is if I had blank tape! They were generously letting people videotape that night, and I really feel a longing for those moments sometime... but hey, no tape! ..So just memories..
Also, I had to get up for my flight at 4 a.m., so that was a drag too (no moonlight swim for me)... but the GOOD vibe of that night is still one of my favorite concert experiences of all time!
Glad you enjoyed the music. But you said what I think most people say about things when they listen to Hawaiian music -- about how NICE the musicians are; how engaging they are; how hospitable and friendly they are. That is what makes it so wonderful. The human touch.
