Several people have e-mailed me wondering what the latest health woes were. You know how I have said that I was on low salt diet beause of heart trouble. Well, I have done well keeping the blood pressure down. Way down. Way, way down. So low that I had a mini-stroke, a transient ischemic attack. My carotid arteries , it turns out, are nearly as blocked as my cardiac arteries were. The low blood pressure was not strong enough to push blood to my head past the narrowed portions of my carotid arteries, so I experienced stroke symptoms on the right side of my face and my right arm. Luckily, it started to resolve itself by time the paramedics got there. Shortly after all those handsome firemen and paramedics got to the house, the drooping face was getting better and I could communicate with them. It took a bit longer for the arm to have feeling in it again.
So if you guys ever think I talk too much, that I am flapping my jaws way too much, well, I guess you are right. I was flapping my jaws on account that was the best I could do. It ws the weirdest feeling. I knew what I wanted to say but I couldn't make my mouth say what I wanted to.
Prognosis: now I have to keep my blood pressure higher until I can get surgery to clean out the left carotid artery, They are going to slice open my neck and slice open the artery and scrape out all the gunk so I have increased blood flow. It only requires an overnight stay in the hospital. I will have it done August 31.
Can you believe the doctors did not want me to come to Hawai`i? The noive of them. Well, Auntie had to tell them what's what. If they really wanted to see me have a full blown stroke, then just try to keep me from going holoholo to O`ahu. Hmmpf. To me there is no difference between waiting for the surgery at home or waiting in Honolulu. Oh, wait a minute, yes there is. Hawai`i is beautiful. Cleveland is not.
Once again, this shows another danger to bad diet -- 57 years of hillbilly diet (and maybe some genetics, too). Pork fat does not rule.

"All those handsome firemen" got that blood pumping. HMMMM. Isn't "That handsome Ocean Kaowili" a fireman? I sense a pattern here. Me, I'm only a body mechanic. Unko Paul |

Aloha E Wanda - I am a doctor and have heart troubles also so I'm pretty familiar with the scene. I'm also very conservative. One way to deal with your trip would be, if you got into trouble, to go to an ER and take whoever you get. The conservative way would be to select a cardiologist by referral from friends or by looking them up on the net and picking one who sounds good to you. Then, you could write to her/him, explain where you're at and ask how you can get yourself established with them. They might suggest having an appointment just to get to know you and your cardiac situation before anything happens. They might also suggest having your records (scans, ultrasounds, EKG's and progress notes) sent to them. That way, if you need their care, they won't have to go only by what you tell them of your cardiac history and whatever tests they do themselves.
I have found over and over that when making medical decisions, there is no best way to go. Instead, we must "take our best shot" and let fate or your higher power or Ke Akua do the rest. So here's what would be my best shot at managing your situation FWIW. Hope you have a great time.

Mike - Thanks for the compliment. Spry is definitely one thing I am not. But the vacation did wonders for me. Of course when I came home, there is a message on the machine telling me to come in Tuesday for pre-admission testing. I'll get the roto-rooter job done, and I hope nomo problems with the other side.
And Mike, I did not eat any of the pie you brought to the kanikapila at Kaka`ako. I cannot believe I left it alone. Maybe if so many folks weren't around to talk to, or so many songs to sing, that mouth wolda been filled with that pie! It was good seeing you again, my friend. |

I'm feeling pretty good. I sure look weird, though. Half of my face and neck are all swollen. And the scars. Yike. All I need are some electrodes sticking out of my neck so I will look like Frankenstein.
But I still get da sowah stomach. I do not know how to cure that problem. I'm spreading my meds out as much as I can so I am not taking a whole handful at once, b0ut the meds do not play well together.
I've been working on thank you cards and scrapbooks from our trip.
The first scrapbook I am pau with is the one for Terry (Ukulele911). The meleman will be taking it away shortly.
And `Oni`oni won't leave me alone. She loves her mama. I love the kitty, too, but just not right after she comes out of the littah box. Hauna. Matter of fact, I was changing the littah box when I had the mini stroke. I wonder if any correlation?
