Pleny chicken skin in Seattle today with wonderful, heartfelt and at times, stunning music. We were treated to straight-ahead slack from Cyril Pahinui, Dennis Kamakahi, Don Kaulia, Sonny Lim and Leabert Lindsey, to the "younger generation" crossing the lines in Jeff Patterson and Makana.
I'll leave it to others like Retro and Thumbstruck to fill in the details if so inclined. Suffice to say one trio brought down the house before the intermission, and that was Cyril, Sonny and Gabby's grandson, Phillip Kunia Galdera. Kunia has a great voice (think Tony Bennet) and fine chops on the uke. He plays at the Big Island, Four Seasons Resort M-F at the Beach Tree Restaurant. I'd drive from Na'alehu to hear this guy.
Post intermission at Town Hall, Jeff Peterson and Makana played, and you could hear a pin drop. There was just total focus and appreciation for two extrordinary muscians. Jeff's eclectic capabilites, light touch, phenomenol intonation, and the most tasteful runs in slack key are a gift.

The whole weekend was magic---kinda like being in the islands, but able to sleep in my own bed at night. How can you beat that? |

so dumb of me - it didn't even occur to me to meet up with you taropatchers who would've been there. it would've been nice to meet you folks in person! i was sitting in the third row, the one winning all the prizes (I had like, 6 winning tickets lol). I was also at the reception the night before
jeff and makana both really knocked it out of the park in the 2nd half, putting their own spin on all that came before. my personal favorite part of the show was the duet they did - man that was really something.
really wish there had been a better turnout for the event - any ideas on how to get more folks out (not just people on this site) next time? |

Tafkam1, I thought you looked familiar, but I couldn't figure out why! Congrats on winning all that stuff - Retro and I were sitting about three rows in back of you on the right.
I think Kunia stole the show - we were all talking about him afterward. He sang AN OCTAVE ABOVE HIMSELF on verses 3 and 4 of Pauoa Liko Ka Lehua. Turns out my favorite Aunty was once his teacher way back when. He's a very nice person as well. |

Shucks,
I would have been there if it were not for a very tight schedule at work and a required wedding attendance the weekend before when my family heirloom guitar was stolen. Too much huhu for one week. I'm sorry I missed it. |

Aloha from Seattle,
The first annual Slack Key Festival was a roaring success! Hands down the best concert I have ever seen. There were tears of joy and rememberance and more chicken skin than in the local meat section of your favorite grocery. Cyril's set with Sonny and Kunia was just tremendous. When Kunia jumped into his falsetto, our hair stood on end and everyone's energy level jumped up about six notches! It was my first exposure to Sonny, Donald Kauila, Leabert and Jeff Peterson. Wow! But when Makana took the stage he JUST BLEW EVERYONE AWAY!
Every performer went to our hearts and I believe they could feel the respect, acceptance and appreciation for their wonderful performance.
I hope this becomes a regular anual event for us in the Emerald City because it was almost as good as a clear night on Molokai, with the warm breeze blowing and the sound of the waves soothing your soul.
Thank You Cyril, Dennis, Jeff, Makana, Sonny, Leabert, Kunia, Donald and Jacqueline Rosetti for your warmth and Aloha.
A hui hou |

...and I was the guy who walked on stage while Skylark & Braddah Gomes were doing a raffle, after Jeff Peterson's set; I had found some keys to a rental car in the parking lot earlier, and they didn't belong to any of the artists, so I gave them to Skylark.
Typical of me - always finding a way to get on stage! |

Leave it to Retro to find any way to get backstage. Was probably his own keys. E Takfam1 my wife and I were across the stairway from you row 4. The workshop was good too got a lot from Cyril Kunia and Dennis. This was a great event and It should happen next year too. If East side like come you gotta let Cyril know abot the weather situation up here. Any way it was one of the music highlights of the year. Sonny Lim was the most hard working of them all and so laid back that you could easily under rate this fabulous musician. Don Kaulia is a musicianʻs musician and one of the nicest person ever. |
