Hi friends,
As of this morning 8:00 AM this fire in the Santa Cruz mountains has grown to 6,800 acres. We are here in Boulder Creek and were not affected until now except for the huge columns of smoke visible over the ridge yesterday. Now it appears that the wind has shifted and smoke is coming our way. Also, the helicopters are now filling up their buckets from the Loch Lomond Reservoir which is behind us, to the East. That means things are rapidly changing, because yesterday they were filling from the ocean.
I am at this moment preparing our RV, which we had used for Lark Camp, back into our escape-mobil. The fire is still some distance away, and I hope we won't have to, but if we do evacuate, I want to be ready and not panic packing everything at the last minute. Now I just have to decide which instruments to take. (After the 4 cats)
Thanks to those of you who have emailed me about this situation, I'll try to check in tonight, if I can.
Aloha, Julie

Julie & Larry,
I know what you are going through. It happened here 3 times in the past few years. If you can see the fire, leave. Don't wait until it is upon you.
I'll be thinking of you.

No rain until about December here in Central CA. Good news is that the fire is 50% contained and the smoke is no longer a problem in Boulder Creek-Ben Lomond area, but could it affect the Polynesian Festival at the wharf scheduled for today (Sunday) |

E Julie & Larry, you spok da glow-- go! Take yoʻ fry pan, man, and get on the lam. Scram. Make one bee-line wid da felines. Try stay mellow, fellow, no go roast one marshmallow. You see fire, get thee nigher. No choke in da smoke, ʻas no joke. Ash start to fall, make a house call, donʻt stall, Paul, thatʻs all. Come in one spark, build an Ark. Depart, Bart! It get hot, trot! Tarry not! You see flame, donʻt stop to complain, get on da train, ʻas a no-brain, Romaine. You see red, get outta bed, Fred, and quit your shed. ʻNuff said.
Thinking & praying of you guys. Try one rain dance! |

Of course I am watching it on the TV here as often as it is broadcast. Seems the "Lockheed Fire" which is more correctly the "Bonny Doon Fire" (the fire crews just happened to be using the Lockheed facility near there as a staging ground) was 40% contained last night and the higher winds they were afraid of did not come for most of today. They should be able to hold it at the ridge in any case so youze guyz (Julie and Larry) should be OK this time (with just a little luck).
Yes, and as Bwop plagarized, there must be more than 50 ways to leave your fire. Very wise to pack the camper in advance.
Wishing you that little bit of luck this time and the next time(s).

We're checking the news and our thoughts are with you. Try to keep windows closed, breathing smoke won't help the vocal chords! Let us know what's happening. |

Hi folks,
Yesterday when the smoke became really thick around our house, I hoofed on down to the hardware store in town to buy a bolt cutter (some fool has chained off our emergency exit road) and a chain saw. As I was in the hardware store, the sky cleared up and when I arrived back home, it looked like another sunny afternoon! Go figure. The wind shifted again and we were able to breathe.
Today, though, another smoky day. I had to leave my work in the garden. Ironically, I am trying to get ready for one of our neighborhood "fire prevention and clearance day" next weekend, where we go around the neighborhood and clear brush etc, and then I feed everyone, so my garden/deck/eating area has to be ready.
We are about 4 miles, the way the crow flies, from the fire, and it looks as if those valiant firefighters expect to get control by August 23. Thank you everyone, for your concern, and your comical jabs. I have no qualms about leaving my house when I see the first flame. After I hose the place down...

Another wise move. Make sure it is a pretty good sized one!

12 gauge, chainsaw, bolt cutters, ukulele. Always in the back of my Jeep ready for a quick egress anywhere.
Hope it's all calmed down for you Julie. We got smoked pretty bad down in San Jose last Saturday morning. Was in the air when I got up. Nothing like you had in the SLV however.
Man I don't miss living up there anymore !
Aloha everyone!
