Saturday, August 22, 2009, 1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m., Center Court Join Slack Key master Ron Loo and his son as they perform Hawaiian music off their debut album “Back to Back.”
This concert should be great, and free too! Uncle Ron Loo is a traditional/old-style player, an excellent and well respected kumu, and very pono to the slack key tradition. He was my first slack key teacher back in the '80s when he taught Adult Ed at Kamehameha School (Ron taught the beginner class and George Kuo taught the advanced class; are any of you alums out there in Taropatch Land? I would love to reconnect).
Ron doesn't perform publicly much so this should be a treat. I have not seen his son play, but I'm sure they've worked out some beautiful duets. Check them out if you can.
