Join me this Saturday at the Biscuits and Blues Union Room for some ukulele music. I will also be playing slack key guitar and the harmonica for a couple of songs. The Union Room is a great intimate setting to play in. Food and drinks are now available for your enjoyment. I will be playing mostly Hawaiian songs, but please don't get upset if I play Beatles, Hendrix, Makana, Cole Porter or Tchaikowsky also. No can help, I love those guys. There will be some hula dancing too. If anyone wants to get up and dance Hiilawe, Pua Hone or Kawika, that's fine with me. We'll play it by ear, yeah. Please come check it out. Tell your friends. Going be good. Cheap too brah. Mahalo... Hiram

Sir Hiram,
Hmmm . . . "Master," "Ukulele," "King." You're just missing one more thing--cut an album with an attractive local-girl actress and you'll be a shoe in for the next Hawaiian Grammy.

Doug,
You forgot a couple things.
Hiram: First, make sure you have an Hawaiian Drivers License. Second, rent a conference room in one of the fancy hotels to record the project. Then it's LOCAL. You can still call yourself The Grammy Award Winning Master `Ukulele King, just don't expect to get paid. Remember that Release Form you signed??? You'll also need a fancy name like Ho`olau Productions.
Have a great gig!!!!

Way to go Hiram. Wish I was there to support you. Maybe those taropatchers living near you could at the least help out instead of cheap ass tag statements. Talk about 'pono'.
Cheers Hiram. |

Thanks for the encouragement Don. The gig went great. Everyone seemed to enjoy it and I sold quite a few CD's. But there was only one taropatcher there. Me. I am retracting what I said earlier because I don't feel I am knowledgeable enough in slack key or the music business to participate in the discussion. I know a lot about music theory but have, for the most part, ignored and stayed away from the business aspect of making music. I think the nature of the music industry and how it affects the perception of music is at the heart of the current debate between Doug and Don. |

He was being facetious. Might want to do some homework before making comment. Just a suggestion..

I’m sorry if I offended anyone with my comment to Hiram’s post. No need to get personal or resort to name calling on the ‘Patch. I was playing along with Hiram’s kolohe but insightful humor of using certain marketing buzzwords or other strategies that we’ve seen recently to self-promote oneself or increase the odds of winning an award. Perhaps I went too far, so I apologize.
Hiram, sorry I wasn’t able to make your gig (sounds like a cool venue) but hope to see you in a couple of weeks. By the way, I also thought the post that you removed was very well stated, but I respect your reasons for pulling it.
Aloha, Doug

There is no debate. It is just a difference of Doug's opinion between my opinion. I don't live off of music. I have a professional job working as an engineer/project manager for Grace Pacific Corporation here in the Hawaiian islands. Music is my hobby and I happen to inherit being 4th generation kiho'alu bloodline...my great grandfather John Puni Kaulia was paniolo who was part of the league of cattlemen training under the Mexican Vaquero Ramone in Kohala on the Big Island. Ramone was one of the three Vaqueros who introduced their guitar style in the 1840's. Tutu John was most noted for writing E Liliu E, his brother James was the emissary of Queen Liliuokalani who deliver her petition to then President Cleveland and then to President Mckinley in the late 1800's. So for me to debate Doug's or anybody else's mana'o ... no need. Just bust out the guitars and let the playing to the debating. Hats off to you Hiram! Jus' get out there and jam, after all it this is all pono.
