Cool happenings for October. Sounds like plenty stuff to keep folks busy and plenty of learning opportunities, too. Wish we were there.

October 10 Eo E `Emalani I Alaka`i Koke`e State Park, Kaua`i 10 a.m. Since its inception in 1988, the `Emalani Festival has become one of the most authentic and powerful Hawaiian cultural experiences The even commemorates the 1871 journey of Queen Emma to the upland forest of Alaka`i. Featuring Live Hawaiian music, halau hula, historical displays and a re-enactment of the Queen's entrance in Kanaloahuluhulu Meadow on horseback (at noon). Price: Manuahi
Sunday, October 11 Moloka`i Hoe Annual men's 41 mile Moloka`i to O`ahu Outrigger canoe race across the Kaiwi Channel. Paddles up at Moloka`i's Hale o Lono beach at 7:30 a.m. Finish line is Duke's Beach at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki.
October 16-18 Hilo Wayfinding and Navigation Festival `Imiloa Astronomy Center, Hilo, Hawai`i Talks by noted voyagers, workshops, demonstrations and opportunities to learn about the culture of the Pacific canoe community.
October 18 Hulihe`e Palace, Ali`i Drive, Kailua, Hawai`i Stroll 1 p.m. Concert 4 p.m. Concert featuring the Merrie Monarch Men's Glee Club and hula. After the concert, plenty kama`aina discounts at restaurants and shops all along Ali`i Drive. Price: Manuahi
October 22 through January 31 In Honor of Grandmothers Honolulu Academy of the Arts The Academy of Arts often receives gifts from people who donate cherished items in honor of their grandmothers, some of which inspired this exhibit. Diverse examples with fascinating histories.

Sunday October 18 1-6pm Maui Arts & Cultural Center's Events Lawn
Bring your own seating. Announced performers are Na Palapalai, Hulu Lindsey, Kamaka Fernandez, Richard Ho`opi`i, The Hula Honeys, Kanekoa featuring Vince Esquire, Herb Ohta San with Nando Suan, and many more.
There are always vendors of food, lei, arts & crafts, and beverages.
