Congratulations, Jack! Retirement is GREAT! Too bad we have to be old to do it. |

Ho`omaika`i, Jack. Retirement is something we all should aspire to. You can go visit your sister, and go visit Duke dem. And if you take a notion, can visit me & Paul. The welcome mat is always out.
One of the best things is you get to sleep until your body says wake up. That is a wonderful luxury.
Best wishes from Paul and I. |

Congrats, Keaka! I know there are things you'll miss, but making every song you play in a little sweeter is just as important as your work in engineering.

Which town? I'll be in LA for Thanksgiving and in HI in January. Probable in Eugene late October. |

Here is a Poem for you Jack - from a Chris Smithers song:
It's not Hawaiian, but I think it's very good.
(I wish I had written it - but Chris Smithers beat me to it, and I don't think he will mind if I pass on some of the lines)
If I were young again I'd pay attention, To that little known dimension, the taste of endless time. Just like water, it runs right through our fingers, But the flavor of it lingers like a rich red wine.
In those days we were single, and we lived them one by one. Now we hardly see 'em, they don't walk, they run. But I got plenty left I've set my sight on, Don't wait up leave the light on, I'll be home soon.
Through years of rhyming couplets, and we sang `em two by two. Now we hardly rhyme at all but here's a few: And if they hurt there's bullets left to bite on, Don't wait up leave the light on, I'll be home soon.
That drummer in my head needs inspiration, There's a lack of syncopation, that holds me to a line. It's just so hard to leave these cages that we think in, By stages we just sink in, to a slow decline.
For years we lived and waltzed the time, and we danced three by three. Now it's hard to dance but if you stick with me... We've got what we need to spend the night on, Don't wait up leave the light on, I'll be home soon
But I'll live to be a hundred, I was born in forty-four, Thirty-nine to go but I ain't keepin score. I've been left for dead before but I still fight on, Don't wait up leave the light on, I'll be home soon.
I've been left for dead before but I still fight on, Don't wait up leave the light on, I'll be home soon.
(Partial Lyrics only)

Congratulations, Jack! I was reminded of a comment recently made to me by a prof in my department who is nearing retirement, that the whole thing is backwards: people should be retired from age 25-50, and then start working at 50. That way they can have the health and energy to do the things one hopes to in retirement, and when they slow down and have acquired more experience and maturity, they can go to work. Sounded kind of logical to me ;-) Enjoy your free time! aloha, Sarah |
