Aloha,
I am planning a big fundraiser next February. It'll be in the middle of a deep, dark, cold winter, and I have arranged to have it at a nice restaurant. I want to transform the place into a "Swingin' Waikiki Nightclub" a la 40's era. My feeling is that folks would enjoy a side-trip to the tropics.
What songs would one have heard in nightclubs at that time? Was that considered the "Big Band" era? Did people dance a lot of swing, or what other kinds of dances? Any help at all would be appreciated.
Mahalo, Julie

Julie, this CD will give you a good idea of what was popular -- and it's appropriately titled "Night Club Hula Hawaiian Style" (from Cord/Hana Ola Records): http://www.mele.com/music/artist/various+artists/night+club+hula...hawaiian+style/
It offers some big bands, some groups, and a solo by Gabby. Check out the names of some of the groups...George Archer & His Pagans. Wot??? |

Mr. Admin - thanks for the Ray Kinney website as I enjoyed it greatly. Interesting to see the sitting hula and the horn section. |

Hi Julie-
Just saw this. Sounds like a fun evening.
The 40s were at the transition between big band swing and the smaller, more R&B style postwar bands. Think Dorsey Brothers (individually by then), Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Louis Jordan. That's what most people associate with the era.
Here's a fun roundup of some of the most popular records of the 40s. You might be surprised at what's there.

Here's some more background: http://www.thepeoplehistory.com/40smusic.html
Waikiki would have had all that, plus the great swinging Hawaiian bands, as referenced by Auntie Maria & Andy.
So who ya gonna hire for the band??? |

Hi Julie, Jerry's mom gave him a copy of Harry Owen's book "Sweet Leilani". As you probably know, Harry Owens wrote many songs and his group the Royal Hawaiians performed at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. This was from 1935 and on for years. Many of his songs you sing already: Sweet Leilani, To You Sweetheart, Aloha, Princes Poo-poo-ly (yep that's the way he spelled it!), Hawaii Calls, Hawaiian Hospitality, Maunaloa, Isa Lei. Hope your fund raiser is a great success! Aloha, Diana Petersen |
