I was in Honolulu last week to visit family. Life is good albeit different with a two year old. We hit several beaches and playgrounds. Although tempted to run all over the island to see more music and people, happily opted for less hectic by spending time on the East side.
Here are my brief musical highlights.
Blu Water Grill (Tuesday) - It was good to see familiar faces among the diners who were there to hear Kawika Kahiapo and Walt Keale. I enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. The guys have been playing here for about three years now. We always enjoy Kawika's kī hōʻalu and smooth vocals. When Walt sings you close your eyes and hear Uncle Moe coming through. www.bluwatergrillhawaii.com
Kani Ka Pila Grille (Friday) - Kaukahi takes the stage every Friday night. I was bummed to have missed Cyril Pahinui and Peter Moon, Jr. on Tueday, but glad to make it Friday, my first visit to the Kani Ka Pila Grill. Great roster of Hawaiian music including recently added Ledward Kaapana on Saturdays. The service was excellent and menu very reasonable. www.outriggerhawaii.com/kani_ka_pila_grille.aspx
Michel's (Friday) - Stopped for coffee and dessert at the bar to hear Darin Leong (filling in for Jeff Peterson). Darin's 4-hour set included slack key originals and very cool fingerstyle arrangements of Stevie Wonder, Tom Petty and more. Dangerously good dessert. I was the only guy in shorts. www.michelshawaii.com
Kona Brewing Company (Sunday) - It was great fun to see Led and the Led Heads. It was also good to catch up with and hear the Abrigo family perform. Fran Guidry rocked out with Led for several songs. Thanks Fran and Lynn for your hospitality! I also met Mitch Chang (www.socalslackkeyfest.com) who joined Led for a couple of tunes.
There were far too many things to do with too little time. Now back to the grind in NJ with a 50 degree, steady rain outside.

Hey Andy - missed you at Pakele for Lorna Lim's CD release party!!! (You really gotta work on that being in two places at once thing...)
In case anyone was planning to go see him on a Saturday, just wanted to mention that Led isn't a permanent fixture at Kani Ka Pila Grille - they rotate different folks through there on Saturday and Sunday... (But Led will be there on Saturdays thru 11/7!) |

Hey Andy, that was awesome seeing you there, what are the chances? Not only you but Fran and the Abrigo Ohana too - that was a really nice night. Hope we bump into each other again soon - next time I want to hear you play! |

Andy, sounds like you probably won't be making it out to the SF Bay Area during the Thanksgiving weekend as you have in the past. Hmmmmm didn't we get together with Genaro and Sil at Sil's house last year for an impromptu kani session? |

Restaurants-Oahu has choke good restaurants. Some little Mom& Pop places I may not find again. We bought Lau Lau's & Poke from a truck parked on the side of the road a few miles from Waimanalo -Way good chow! Next time we went by(OK, was a year later) he wasn't there. I guess ya gotta get there before he sells out & goes home. Some really great food follows the Bolo-Heads to Kaka Ako every time we go there. At Dukes house, too. Unko Paul |

Andy, what a shame you won't be coming out because Sil, Doug (PearlCityBoy) and I are heading down to San Jose for a kani this Sunday with some friends including Dave Nye. Will be thinking of you! Much Aloha... |
