The Details are here for this year's Hula Workshop. Ka Hui Hula o Ka ‘Äina Punahele is proud and honored to sponsor the
fifth annual NORTH COAST HULA Workshop and Lü’au!!
The workshop and lü’au are a fundraiser, which this year, will benefit the ALS Association; Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease. We are honored that Kumu Hula Mäpuana de Silva and Kïhei de Silva have accepted our invitation to teach at this year’s fundraiser.
Mapuana de Silva is kumu hula of Halau Mohala ’Ilima. She continues a lineage of long established and conservative hula. She graduated in a traditional ’uniki ceremony from Maiki Aiu Lake and has also studied under Lani Kalama, Sally Wood Naluai and Pat Namaka Bacon. Mapuana is an accomplished and influential figure in the hula community. Mapuana has dedicated her life to the art of traditional hula and sharing it with the world. One way is through her halau’s record making consecutive entries in the Merry Monarch Festival. This past year marks the first time she has entered men for a competition. Mapuana works alongside her husband to impart the history, language, and values of traditional hula and the Hawaiian people. Her husband Kihei de Silva, a Hawaiian Language expert is a highly respected authority on ancient mele and works translating chants. He is a song writer, teacher and author and together with his wife, they work and live to perpetuate the Hawaiian culture.
