A quick post about weddings. I look back over the last few years and count more wedding performances than I had realized. Overall, very fun. Shouldn't they be? It's a happy occasion. Fortunately, I have yet to have come across a Bridezilla. Knock on rosewood (or wood of your choice.) More often than not, I am amazed by the faith that people have in me. After trading a few emails about date, times and their preferred music, often never having spoken over the phone, I show up and play on their special day.
Weddings come in many different shapes and sizes. That is, for a musician the event can include playing background music before the ceremony, ceremony music, cocktail hour, and/or reception. It can take place indoors or outdoors. It can be a large group or very intimate.
Ceremony music used to be absolutely terrifying to me. I felt the pressure to perform well or else I could single handedly ruin somebody's wedding day. I still feel that way; but now, it is only slightly scary. Probably a good thing since fear is excellent motivation for better preparation.
I reflect on my past experiences because in three days my brother is getting married. And here's a first for me. In addition to playing ceremony music, I will be best man running around for photos and whatever else the best man is charged to do. I am honored to play a few tunes for my brother and his bride to be. Either it'll be really special or he'll get what he paid for. Ha ha. Wish me luck.
If you can guess one of the two "hawaiian music" songs requested for the ceremony, I will send you a prize.

Aloha e Andy! I like wedding gigs, too. Mostly 'cause I play mine on Kapalua beach. Go swim, play the gig and spend all the winnings on the kama'aina rates at Merrimans on the point. Rough life.

One of the most requested has to be "Somewhere/Wonderful."

I love playing at weddings. Everyone is so happy. For uke players, over the rainbow is the most requested. If you are on guitar, Andy, and if others are requesting, my guess is something most people are familiar with. Here is a list of what I have been asked to play at weddings as a processional. Over the Rainbow Can't Help Falling In Love Hawaiian Wedding Song Fools Rush In Pua Hone As rescessionals, Over the Rainbow I'm Yours We're In the Money Anything goes for the reception. Congradulations Andy and family and have a great wedding. |

Lei Aloha, Lei Makame is also a possibility.
I think I have even heard of Morning Dew sung at a wedding even though it is more of a song of loss.

Ok, I should have prefaced - 'ukulele for the processional, then guitar for recessional. While Darin was close with Ice Ice Baby, I don't have those moves (or hair). Fran and Hiram win with "Somewhere/Wonderful" and "Pua Hone". Recessional is non-Hawaiian, a Frames song (you may know the group from the movie Once) "Star Star." Hiram - please email me your snail mail. Fran - let me see if I have your address somewhere. I'll dig through my stuff to see what you've won. |
